NKorea may face famine next year: expert

SEOUL, Oct 18, 2007 (AFP) - North Korea may face a new famine next year as floods and bad weather aggravate its already chronic food shortages, a leading expert warned Thursday.

Floods and storms, followed by outbreaks of blight and damage by insects, deprived the impoverished nation of some 10 percent of its autumn harvest this year, said Kwon Tae-Jin, who is research director of the Korea Rural Economic Institute.

China Red Cross raises 4.2 billion yuan for disaster relief in past 20 years

BEIJING, Oct9, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) has raised 4.2 billion yuan in relief funds in the past 20 years to help 160 million people affected by natural disasters, a senior RCSC official said on Tuesday.

RCSC has also established a nationwide disaster relief network which consists of six regional and 13 provincial-level relief centers in places frequently hit by national disasters, RCSC deputy president Su Juxiang said.

"The relief network greatly enhances RCSC's effectiveness to respond to nature disasters," Su said.

Red Cross healing battered DPRK health infrastructure

With rainstorms and strong winds from last week's Typhoon Wipha compounding the woes of hundreds of thousands of North Koreans already suffering from August's floods, United Nations agencies are pre-positioning food for a new distribution and appealing to donors to make up a huge funding shortfall.

The floods are reported to have affected close to 1 million people and displaced nearly 170,000 across flood-affected provinces in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), killing 454 people with 156 still missing and over 4,351 injured.

Countries where violence persists and populations live in fear. People in Hunger's Global Hotspots don't know what tomorrow will bring and they often have to rely on WFP for their next meal.

On 13 September a convoy of three commercial trucks carrying 84 metric tonnes of WFP wheat was attacked by armed assailants on the Kabul-Kandahar highway reroute to Khas Uruzgan district of Uruzgan province. NKorea reports severe flood damage

SEOUL, Sept 24, 2007 (AFP) - Heavy rains spawned by a typhoon have destroyed or inundated more than 22,000 houses and buildings across North Korea, hampering efforts to recover from earlier floods, state media said Monday.

Rain storms triggered by Typhoon Wipha from Tuesday to Friday last week caused heavy losses in various sectors of the economy, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

NKorea reports 'heavy losses' after intense rains

SEOUL, Sept 21, 2007 (AFP) - North Korea has been pummelled by heavy rains that have caused "heavy losses" and flooded swathes of cropland for the second time in a month, state media reported.

Rice and other crops were lost as rains spawned by Typhoon Wipha inundated western provinces and the capital Pyongyang in the past three days, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

BEIJING, Sept 21, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Typhoon Wipha had left seven people dead and four missing by 3:00 p.m. on Friday in east China, a spokesman with the Ministry of Civil Affairs said.

A total of 2.7 million people in Zhejiang, Fujian, Shanghai and Jiangsu have been relocated and more than 11 million people were affected.

The typhoon, which caused direct economic losses of 7.45 billion yuan (nearly one billion U.S. dollars), also destroyed more than 13,000 houses and damaged 57,000 others, the spokesman said.

DPRK hit by Wipha-accompanied downpour

Pyongyang, September 21 (KCNA) -- The downpour brought by the typhoon Wipha traveling from Shandong Peninsula of China to the north of the West Sea of Korea fell in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea for consecutive days from September 18.

In particular, the amount of rainfalls in some areas in the western coast reaches nearly 50 percent of that in the period from August 7 to 14.
