Timeline - Major typhoons to hit Taiwan

Aug 14 (Reuters) - Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou, under mounting pressure over his government's response to a devastating typhoon, estimated that more than 500 people had died in flooding and mudslides. [nSP438700]

Typhoon Morakot struck Taiwan a week ago, but the scale of the disaster only started to become clear this week after the storm had weakened over neighbouring China.

Following is a timeline of major typhoons in Taiwan in recent years:

August 1996 - Typhoon Herb sweeps through Taiwan, killing at least 45 people.

August 2000 - Typhoon Bilis kills 11 people and injures 110.

China: 1.38 billion yuan put into Red Cross relief operations in 2007

In the past year 2007, the Chinese Red Cross put into 1.384 billion yuan in cash and kind put into its relief operations nationwide, which is reveled at the Society's annual board session held in Hangzhou, capital city of Zhejiang province on Jan. 7, 2008.

According to the meeting, total of 2.139 billion yuan in cash and kind were raised by Red Cross organizations at all levels on the mainland China, in which 638 million by national office and its affiliated institutions, 2.139 billion by local branches. The fund and items worth 1.384 billion yuan benefited more than 15.73 million people

Philippines: DSWD, Habitat for Humanity to build houses

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Habitat for Humanity Philippines Foundation, Incorporated (HFHP) recently signed a memorandum of agreement for the construction of 495 core shelter units for families displaced by disasters in the Bicol region.

Under the agreement, DSWD will release some P34.6 million as its counterpart for the construction of the housing units. Total project cost is P42.075 million. The HFHP, on the other hand, will hire labor workforce among the beneficiaries to maximize their participation.

800 volunteers help typhoon-affected families rebuild lives in the Philippines

MANILA, 12th October 2007: When some 800 volunteers arrived in the typhoon-struck Bicol region for a build with Habitat for Humanity Philippines, incessant rain was the unexpected welcome. Undaunted, some removed their shoes, others donned raincoats but all soldiered on in Anislag village, Daraga town, where 25 duplexes, or 50 houses, were to be built in partnership with typhoon-affected families. Each duplex comprises two adjoining houses.

China Red Cross raises 4.2 billion yuan for disaster relief in past 20 years

BEIJING, Oct9, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) has raised 4.2 billion yuan in relief funds in the past 20 years to help 160 million people affected by natural disasters, a senior RCSC official said on Tuesday.

RCSC has also established a nationwide disaster relief network which consists of six regional and 13 provincial-level relief centers in places frequently hit by national disasters, RCSC deputy president Su Juxiang said.

"The relief network greatly enhances RCSC's effectiveness to respond to nature disasters," Su said.

Chinese Red Cross allocates 900,000 yuan for typhoon-hit areas

The China Red Cross Society on Aug.23 offered 900,000 yuan (about 120,000 U.S. dollars) worth of supplies to provinces hit by typhoon Sepat.

The supplies, including 220 tons of rice, 240 tents and 5,000 cases of instant food, have been sent to Hunan, Fujian and Zhejiang provinces in central and southeastern China, according toa spokesman of the Chinese Red Cross.

The society's branches in Zhejiang, Hunan and Fujian have allocated more than 2 million yuan (about 263,000 U. S. dollars) to the relief work.

Two dead, 600,000 evacuated as Sepat sweeps through central China

CHANGSHA, Aug 23, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- More than 588,000 people have been evacuated in central China's Hunan as rivers swell in the wake of typhoon Sepat, which has left two people dead and seven missing in the province.

Major tributaries of the Xiangjiang River in Hunan have reported dangerous or even record water levels on Thursday after torrential rains swept the province for five days.

Two people have been confirmed dead and seven are still missing in Hunan from the rainstorms since Sunday, according to the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters.

CHANGSHA, Aug 21, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- More than 130,000 residents in central China's Hunan Province were forced to evacuate their homes as typhoon Sepat headed inland on Tuesday.

Hunan Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said that in the 48 hours to 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, torrential rains poured into drainage system of the Xiangjiang River, while the upper reaches of the Mishui River, a tributary of the Xiangjiang, also flooded.

Death toll in east China rises to 33 from impact of Typhoon Sepat
