According to Article 2(f) of Humanitarian Aid Regulation (EC) of 20 June 1996(1), DG ECHO's(2) activities in the field of Disaster Preparedness shall be "to ensure preparedness for risks of natural disasters or comparable exceptional circumstances and use a suitable rapid early-warning and intervention system".

Colombia: $ 1.409 millones costó recuperación de Providencia

Providencia, 10 abr (SNE). En la recuperación de la isla de Providencia, afectada por el huracán Beta a finales de 2005, el Gobierno Nacional ha invertido 1.409 millones de pesos, informó Eduardo José González, director de la Oficina de Prevención y Atención de Desastres.

El total de las viviendas que hay censadas en Providencia ascienden a 1.660. Se afectaron con el huracán Beta, el 10 de octubre de 2005, un total de 1.174 viviendas. En este momento, 150 días después, está recuperadas todas las casas afectadas.

Update: USAID assistance to Central America and Mexico hurricane victims

WASHINGTON, DC - The 2005 Atlantic hurricane season brought an unprecedented 13 hurricanes, of which two, Stan and Beta, along with Tropical Storm Gamma, devastated parts of Central America and Southern Mexico. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has contributed more than $14 million to these countries in relief and reconstruction aid. Through USAID and the Department of Defense, the total U.S. Government contribution to the affected region has been more than $21 million to the affected areas, including Guatemala, Mexico, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Honduras.

End of 2005 hurricane season does not mean end of relief efforts

(New York: 1 December 2005): More than 30,000 people remain displaced in temporary shelters in Honduras, in the wake of tropical storm Gamma, the 24th named storm of the official 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, and the last to cause significant damage in the Americas.
Thirty-four deaths have been attributed to Gamma, which brought heavy rain to the Caribbean coast of Honduras from 18 to 20 November. Overall, some 90,000 people have been affected by the storm, which caused significant damage in six departments of Honduras already suffering the effects of hurricanes Wilma and Beta.

Seeks private sector aid for region's victims of natural disasters
U.S. State Department official Karen Hughes will lead a delegation of U.S. business leaders to Central America December 4-6 to encourage private sector aid for the victims of recent natural disasters in the region.

In a November 30 statement, the State Department said Hughes, under secretary for public diplomacy and public affairs, and the private sector leaders will visit Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
