Commonwealth expert focuses on reducing the Caribbean country's reliance on meat imports

When Hurricane Ivan swept through Grenada in 2004, it left the Caribbean country in ruins. Some 90 per cent of homes on the largest island, also called Grenada, were destroyed; the damage totalled more than US$800 million. As the small island state, which is made up of seven islands, struggled to recover, Hurricane Emily arrived (in July 2005) causing severe flooding. The country's economy was devastated.

Call for proposals: Canada Caribbean Disaster Risk Management (CCDRM) Fund

The Canada Caribbean Disaster Risk Management (CCDRM) Fund announces the third call for project proposals. Grants will be made on a competitive basis to support small-scale projects at the community level that deliver measurable results in natural disaster risk reduction and/or in the reduction of the negative impacts of climate change. Projects may range in duration from a few months to two years in maximum duration.

Priority will be given to projects in the $25,000 to $75,000 CDN range. Projects outside this range may be considered

Deadly rains in St.Vincent and the Grenadines

On Friday, September 19, 2008, as a result of the passage of a tropical wave, St Vincent and the Grenadines was drenched by heavy rains which resulted in one (1) death, island wide flooding and landslides which left many roads blocked.

The heavy rains began at about 2.00am and continued for approximately the next twenty four hours. By 6.00am residents were reporting houses being flooded out, rivers overflowing bridges and landslides in several areas of the country. All schools were closed by midday on Friday.

A grant of USD5 million was approved to the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility established to allow Caribbean governments to economically purchase insurance coverage against hurricanes and earthquakes. Assistance for Trust Fund for Human Security project "Restoring Livelihoods in Grenada after Hurricanes Ivan and Emily"

1. On the 22nd of December (Friday), the Government of Japan and the United Nations (UN) decided to extend assistance totalling 1,026,538.3 US dollars (approximately 113.9 million yen), through the Trust Fund for Human Security to a project entitled "Restoring Livelihoods in Grenada after Hurricanes Ivan and Emily" that will be implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Grenada.

The Caribbean region experiences multiple natural disasters. Tropical storms often take the form of a hurricane1, and the hurricane season lasts for six months. The physical risk is combined with socioeconomic factors, such as high population density, fast demographic growth and great poverty. Australian Red Cross housing project in Grenada comes to an end

The bilateral housing project between the Grenada Red Cross (GRC) and Australian Red Cross (ARC) ended in September.

Following hurricanes Ivan, Emily and Dennis all of which affected Grenada in some way, the ARC which got the funds from Australian Aid (Australian Government) donated approximately US$200,000 to construct 19, three bedroom houses.

In recognition of the project the GRC held a ceremony to thank the ARC for their efforts. The ceremony took place in the presence of beneficiaries of Requin and Stone Road in St. David's,
