Summary

This report outlines the results of a follow-up food security assessment conducted in Bogra, Gaibandah, Jamalpur,
Kurigram and Sirajgonj districts of North West Bangladesh in April 2013. The purpose of this assessment was to review the recovery situation and determine any remaining needs of vulnerable households who were affected by the September 2012 floods.

  1. Marshall Islands - The Government has issued an elevated state of disaster due to the severe drought in northern parts of the country, affecting between 3,200 and 5,000 people. Assessments are ongoing and an UNDAC team has arrived in country. WASH is the priority as there is a priority need for safe drinking water.

In Syria, fighting between the Government and opposition groups continued in all governorates apart from Tartous and As-Sweida. Following a large scale offensive by the Government initiated on 26 April, heavy fighting has been reported in and around Damascus. Clashes in Eastern Ghouta forced the closure of Damascus international airport. Approximately 6.8 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in the country while some 4.25 million people are displaced and over 1.4 million people have fled into neighbouring countries.

6.8 million people are in need in of humanitarian assistance in Syria and the UNHCR has defined the crisis as the worst humanitarian disaster since the end of the cold war. 4.25 million people are displaced and over 1.3 million people have fled into neighbouring countries. Fierce fighting continues across the country and cross-border shelling into Lebanon has intensified over the last days.

The Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department of the European Commission (ECHO), is providing €3.65 million (approx. BdT 373 million) to help vulnerable communities in Bangladesh reduce the risks arising from recurring floods, cyclones and other natural disasters. The funds will be used to better prepare both schools and communities in rural and urban settings for disasters, in partnership with local stakeholders and authorities.

• On late Friday, 22 March 2013, tornado ripped through more than a dozen rural villages in the eastern Bangladesh district of Brahmanbaria, in the Chittagong division, battering six unions of three upazilas(sub district)

• On afternoon of Saturday, 23 March 2013, another tornado lashed 50 villages in Patnitola and Damurhuda upazilas of Naogaon districts in the Rajshahi Division.

Heavy fighting continued throughout Syria, with shelling reported from all but two of the Governorates in the country. The violence in densely populated places, including Aleppo, Homs, Deir-ez-Zor, Idleb and central Damascus remained intense. More than 400,000 people have fled Syria since 1 January, bringing the total number of Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries to around 1.32 million as of 14 April, according to UNHCR.

  • Injured people are admitted in Brahmanbaria general hospital and other hospitals/clinics. Very seriously injured 15 persons are sent to Comilla Cantonment and some other persons are sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as well.

  • Construction of 10ft high CI sheet partition in district prison.

  • Electricity system is resumed inside district prison by generator.

  • Fire Service, BGB, Police, RHD have managed to restart road communication by removing fallen trees.
