Floods leave 673 Chinese dead, 159 missing in 2012

BEIJING, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Floods killed 673 people and left another 159 missing in China last year, Zhang Zhitong, office head of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, said on Saturday.

"The death toll was about half the average number seen in the previous years," Zhang said.

Serious floods hit the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, the upper and lower reaches of the Yellow River and northern parts of the Haihe River last year, pushing up water levels on more than 420 additional rivers, Zhang said.

16 dead as landslide buries China school

BEIJING, Oct 04, 2012 (AFP) - Sixteen Chinese children were confirmed dead Thursday after a landslide engulfed their school as they made up classes lost due to deadly earthquakes last month, state media said.

Three others were missing after the landslide buried the school and three farmhouses at Zhenhe village in the mountainous southwestern province of Yunnan, Xinhua news agency reported.

Flash floods prevention has gained benefits

Since 2011, the meteorological protection project of geological disaster prevention implemented by CMA has progressed smoothly. The observing system, equipment support system, forecasting and risk assessment system and early warning service system of this project are carried out in an orderly manner. China steps up investment in flood control

Thursday, September 20, 2012 The central government has budgeted 7.78 billion yuan (1.22 billion U.S. dollars) to assist local regions in beefing up flood control efforts, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said Wednesday.

The money budgeted thus far is part of a three-year program launched by the government in November 2010 to build a nationwide flood information and warning system, a statement from the government agency said.

UNICEF mobilizes response to Yunnan Earthquake

BEIJING, 14 September 2012 – UNICEF is mobilizing to send urgently needed support for children affected by the 5.7 magnitude earthquake which recently struck Yunnan. The tremor, which killed 81 and injured more than 800, wiped out 1,900 houses and severely damaged another 37,500. Subsequent heavy rains and mudslides have caused additional damage, and hampered access to the region.

China allocates relief funds to rain-soaked SW areas

BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Finance on Friday allocated 140 million yuan (about 22 million U.S. dollars) in relief funds to southwestern Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality for rain-triggered flooding.

According to a statement from the ministry, the money will be used for evacuations and relocations, subsistence allowances, reconstruction of damaged houses and subsidies and compensation provided to the families of the deceased.

River running through Zhangjiajie on flood alert

CHANGSHA, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Lishui River which runs through Zhangjiajie, China's famed tourist spot in central Hunan Province, is suffering from severe flooding, the provincial flood control headquarters said Thursday.

The headquarters warned that its hydrological stations in Zhangjiajie monitored that the river is suffering from the worst flooding in 65 years.

The flood control headquarters said some 269,000 people in 62 townships in Zhangjiajie City have been evacuated because of the flooding threat. However, no casualties were reported.

China's quake zone guarded against diseases

YILIANG, Yunnan, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Authorities have stepped up sanitary efforts and set up a monitoring network in an earthquake-hit county in southwest China to prevent an outbreak of contagious diseases.

"Due to our efforts, there has been no epidemic outbreak of any kind so far," Lu Lin, head of Yunnan's provincial center for disease control and prevention, said on Wednesday.

But Lu said the risks remain high as Yiliang County was drenched again by floods this week.

Flood leaves 6 dead, 4 missing in SW China

CHENGDU, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- A new round of torrential rains that started Sunday night inundated parts of southwest China's Sichuan Province, leaving six people dead and four missing, local authorities said Monday.

The victims were reported in the cities of Guangyuan and Suining, the Sichuan provincial flood control office said in a statement.

Rainstorms continued into Monday night and a township in Shehong county of Suining reported the largest precipitation of 257.3 mm in just six hours Monday, it said.

Downpour batters SW China's quake zone, forcing thousands to evacuate

YILIANG, Yunnan, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- A heavy downpour started to strike southwest China's quake-hit county of Yiliang early Tuesday morning, triggering floods and forcing thousands to evacuate.

Local fire department has dispatched 22 rescue teams to help evacuate people to safe places after receiving calls for help before dawn.

Rainstorms force 656,600 people to relocate in SW China

CHENGDU, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Continuous rainstorms have affected over 656,600 people as of Saturday in southwest China's Sichuan province, said the provincial flood control authorities.

As of 5:30 p.m. Saturday, over 62,600 people have been forced to relocate to avoid geological risks caused by this round of rainstorms, according to the Sichuan provincial headquarters of flood control.

Severe rainstorms, which started on Thursday, battered 23 cities and counties of Sichuan, flooded about 28,960 hectares of farmlands and collapsed about 8,500 houses.

BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's central authorities initiated a level-four emergency plan on Sunday afternoon in response to severe flooding in southwest China's Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality.

The National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs have dispatched teams to help with the relief work.
