ACT Alert 2/2003: Dominican Republic - Tropical Storm Odette

Geneva, 10 December, 2003 - On December 6, Tropical Storm Odette hit the south of the Dominican Republic, affecting the provinces of Barahona, Pedernales and Baoruco and causing electric storms and flash flooding. The National Emergency Commission (CNE) reports that Tropical Storm Odette caused the death of 10 people and seriously injured 14. Substantial damage was sustained by many farms and crops, electric lines and the dwellings of 859 families, of which 34 were completely destroyed. Damages were also reported in the capital city of Santo Domingo.

Tropical storm kills 10 in Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (Reuters) - Ten people were killed and 15 injured when Tropical Storm Odette pounded the Dominican Republic over the weekend, authorities said on Monday.

At least 18 houses were destroyed by Odette, a storm that formed after the Atlantic hurricane season ended in November.

Most of the people killed were drowned or buried under mudslides, said national emergency commission spokesman Radhames Lora Salcedo,

El Presidente Hipólito Mejía dijo este domingo, que el Gobierno enviará técnicos de la Secretaría de Agricultura y del Instituto Nacional de la Vivienda para evaluar y reparar los daños causados por la tormenta Odette en las provincias de Barahona, Pedernales y Bahoruco, las más afectadas de la zona sur.

El Presidente Mejía informó que a tempranas horas de este lunes los técnicos de Agricultura y del Invi iniciarán en Barahona y Bahoruco los trabajos de evaluación del estado en que se encuentran las plantaciones de plátanos y reparación de las viviendas que sufrieron daños.

Tropical depression intensifies to become Tropical Storm Odette

Creating a record, Tropical Storm Odette becomes the first storm to form in the Caribbean Sea in December since record keeping started in 1886.

A disturbance was upgraded to Tropical Depression 20 early Thursday morning and by last evening it has strengthened to become a tropical storm.

Defying most computer models, Odette was moving to the right or more eastward, that what the models were predicting.

At 7 o'clock this morning Odette continued moving towards Hispaniola where tropical storm warnings were in effect

Jamaica discontinues Tropical Storm warning

Jamaica, Dec 5, 2003 (ODPEM) - The Meteorological Service has discontinued the TROPICAL STORM WARNING for Jamaica as Tropical Storm ODETTE picks up speed and continues to move away.

At 4:00 p.m. the centre of Tropical Storm Odette was located near latitude 15.0 degrees North, longitude 73.6 degrees West, or about 440 kilometres southeast of Morant Point, Jamaica.

The Tropical Storm is moving towards the northeast at 19 km/h and this general motion is expected to continue during the next 24 hours. This motion could bring the centre near the southern

Jamaica: Tropical storm watch

Arising from the recent disturbance in the weather conditions, a meeting of the National Response Team was held at the offices of the ODPEM. The meeting was advised by the Meteorological Service that the island will be affected by outbreaks of showers and thunderstorms specifically the Northern Parishes of St Ann, Westmoreland, Portland, St Thomas, Kingston and St Andrew and St Catherine. These showers are expected to continue into tonight bringing a high potential for flooding in low-lying and flood prone areas.
