President orders disaster aid for Micronesia Typhoon recovery

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The head of the U.S Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today that President Bush has declared a major disaster for the Federated States of Micronesia, opening the way for the use of federal funds to help the state of Yap recover from the effects of Typhoon Lupit.

Michael D. Brown, Under Secretary of Homeland Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response, said the President took the action following a review of FEMA's analysis of Micronesia's request for federal aid.

Pacific islanders cling to life on typhoon-lashed atoll

AUCKLAND, Nov 25 (AFP) - Residents of a remote, low-lying Pacific atoll were Tuesday clinging to life as a powerful typhoon slammed into it, authorities said.

A Civil Defence spokesman in Yap, in the Federated States of Micronesia, told AFP by phone that huge seas with waves up to 10 metres (34 feet) high were overwhelming Ulithi atoll, which is no more than five metres (16 feet) above sea-level, as Typhoon Lupit passed nearby.
