This situation report is based on information provided by the UNDP Resident Representative for Mauritius and Seychelles.

Situation

1. During the week end of 5- 8 September 2002, the Island of Praslin, Seychelles' second largest island, was hit by a severe tropical depression. Praslin has a population of 6,000 which increases significantly during the tourist season. (Information regarding the damage and needs has only now become available).

Tropical depression devastates the Indian Ocean islands of the Seychelles

The Seychelles experienced heavy rains and strong winds after a tropical depression passed over the country last week. Gusting winds of up to 75 knots and rainfall levels of 125 mm on the island of Praslin and 327 mm on the island of Mahé had a devastating impact on the country's infrastructure as well as homes, public buildings, agricutural land and livestock.

The Seychelles Red Cross has launched an emergency appeal for US$ 107,600 which will provide assistance to 2,250 of the most severely affected people.

This Information Bulletin is being issued based on the needs described below. A DREF allocation of CHF 40,000 has been released, and the Federation does not anticipate further needs. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are needed: This operation will be reported on through the quarterly DREF update.

The Situation

The whole of Mahe and Praslin experienced heavy rain and strong wind from Friday 6 September to Sunday 8 September 2002 due to a tropical depression in the region, which was from an easterly direction.
