Report
IRIN
JOHANNESBURG, 26 March (IRIN) - The World Food Programme (WFP) on Wednesday said food shortages in southern Madagascar had "worsened" with a sharp increase in the number of reported cases of malnutrition and tuberculosis.
Some 60,000 people are now affected by drought in five districts in the south of the country.

Describing the situation as "alarming", WFP spokeswoman Annemarie Isler told IRIN the two biggest challenges facing aid agencies were "time and logistics".

WFP appeals for funds to feed 400,000 people in Madagascar

ANTANANARIVO - The UN World Food Programme appealed today for US$8.4 million in cash to help feed 394,250 people severely affected this year by floods, drought and political turmoil in Madagascar.
The funds are needed to purchase 18,400 metric tonnes of food aid to assist vulnerable communities over the next six months.

WFP has already been helping to feed many of those affected by this year's natural and man-made crises with stocks borrowed from other programmes. However, it is clear that WFP's distributions need to be expanded over the coming months to reach all those in need.

Country Director Medair Madagascar
Situation

I have just returned from a trip to the village of Sahambala, some 70 km north-west of Tamatave. The situation in this area is representative for a much larger region, probably extending tens of kilometres north of Fenerive and south down to Brickaville. However, this cannot be ascertained objectively apart from aerial observation, due to the fact that all roads are blocked and bridges washed away. The commune of Sahambava was visited, as the local partner NGO 'Frères de St. Gabriel'

Madagascar flood toll rises to 33

TOAMASINA, Madagascar, May 22 (AFP) - Four people found buried in a landslide in northeastern Madagascar brought the number of those killed by floods there to 33, an official at Toamasina governor's office said Wednesday.

According to Damy Sedaly, the four were found in Antegnina, 75 kilometres (45 miles) west of Toamasina, the country's second city, which itself has been cut off by the floods that followed the passage of tropical storm Kesiny.

Aid workers have warned that the toll could rise in the light of the risks of epidemics, food shortages and the

Relief yet to reach Madagascar region 10 days after floods

by Cecile Cau

TOAMASINA, May 21 (AFP) - Ten days after floods cut off large areas in and around Madagascar's second-largest city, killing 29, relief operations remained stalled Tuesday as a political crisis headed towards military confrontation.

The outlying districts of Ankirihiry, Ambolomadinika and Tanambao are still ankle-deep in water.

"The most urgent thing is to drain the stagnant water," said World Food Programme logistician Flavien Agueh.

The few drainage channels that exist are blocked. "Waters have receded but remain at a third of the level

TOAMASINA, Madagascar, May 17 (AFP) - A long-running row between two rivals for the presidency is preventing desperately needed aid from reaching eastern Madagascar, where floods have killed 29 people, relief workers said Friday.

The flooding, cause by four days of non-stop torrential rain, has killed at least 29 people in and around the port city of Toamasina, 360 kilometers (225 miles) east of the capital, Antananarivo, according to a new toll issued by officials Friday.

Aid organisations warned that the indirect

Heavy rains in eastern Africa kill 150, displace thousands

NAIROBI, May 13 (AFP) - Nearly 150 people have been killed and nearly 175,000 forced to flee their homes in eastern Africa because of torrential downpours in the region, official statistics released Monday said.
With 68 dead and 150,000 displaced, Kenya has been hit hardest by the storms, which have caused landslides and floods along Africa's eastern coast.

The rains have been exceptionally heavy for the past three weeks of this year's rainy season, which meteorologists have attributed to abnormally high temperatures affecting the Indian Ocean.
