Drought relief for Irian Jaya

I am pleased to announce a grant of $300 000 to World Vision Australia to provide emergency food relief to villagers in remote parts of Irian Jaya.

These funds will enable World Vision to provide food supplies to thousands of people in the most severely affected areas of the Jayawijaya district which borders Papua New Guinea. The relief exercise will start immediately and run over the next two months with foodstuffs being flown into remote villages via the town of Wanema.

The disaster
During the past few weeks, cyclones have been creating havoc in the Pacific islands, causing extensive damage and leaving thousands homeless. Many of the most severely affected islands are also the most difficult to access. The three most recent cyclones struck the islands of Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga.

Cyclone Justine hovering off PNG Southeast

A severe tropical cyclone is centred off the southeast tip of Papua New Guinea.

The category three rated cyclone, codenamed Justin, is centred just 140-kilometres from Rossel Island and more than one-thousand-kilometres off the north Queensland coast.

Australia's Tropical Cyclone Warning centre in Brisbane says cyclone Justin, has wind gusts up to 200 kilometres-per-hour, and is affecting small islands in south-eastern Papua New Guinea.

Squally winds and heavy seas are being reported.

Cyclone Justin Situation Report No. 1

1. Cyclone Justin has been affecting Papua New Guinea. National Disaster and Emergency Services (NDES) of the Government confirms 8 deaths from incidents in various parts of the country with 24 missing. Between 1,000 and 1,500 houses have been destroyed and some 12,000 to 15,000 people have been made homeless, also at locations all around the country.

2. Due to communication problems, NDES at this stage cannot provide any further details on damage nor possible assistance needs.
