1.6 million face food shortage

Report
World Vision

By Kathryn Reid

More than 1.6 million people in 15 districts in southern Malawi are coping with serious food shortages, an increase of 200,000 since 2011. Those struggling to feed themselves now make up nearly 12 per cent of the national population.

The price of maize has more than doubled, and many families are eating only once a day, says a report from the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee. People are selling household items to buy food and seeking jobs in urban areas.

Malawi Price Bulletin August 2012

Maize, rice, and cassava are the most important food commodities. Markets selected represent the entire geographic length of the country: two markets in each of the north, center, and south. In the north, Karonga is one of the most active markets in maize and rice and is influenced by informal cross-border trade with Tanzania. Mzimba is a major maize producing area in the northern region. Salima, in the center along the lake, is an important market where some of the fishing populations are almost entirely dependent on the market for staple cereals.

BLANTYRE, Aug 14, 2012 (AFP) - The UN's World Food Programme said Tuesday it needs $48 million in food aid for about 11 percent of Malawi's population who will face hunger due to bad crops.

"It is estimated that those needing food assistance in the southern African country will rise to 1.6 million people during the peak of the lean season early next year," the WFP said in a joint statement with Britain's Department for International Development (DFID).

Britain is the first donor to bankroll the programme, contributing $4.7 million.
