MALAWI:
In southern and central Malawi, it is estimated that 1.63 million people (11% of the population) are food insecure, and will require support for 3 to 8 months.

MADAGASCAR:
A mutiny by a group of military personnel occured in the early hours of 22nd July 2012 at a camp near the Antananarivo airport.

ANGOLA:
An estimated 366,780 households (1,833,900 people) are expected to be affected by drought, and an estimated 533,000 children under age 5 could be affected by various levels of malnutrition.

Southern Africa Food Security Outlook Update July 2012

Significant food price reductions contribute to stable food security conditions

Key Messages

As projected in the June Outlook Update, generally favorable food security conditions are expected to prevail throughout the region from July to September 2012. Main harvests have increased the availability of staple foods at the household level and in local markets. As food prices continue to drop in line with seasonal patterns, food access has improved for most market-dependent households.

Key Messages

  • Based on the results of its post-harvest food security assessment, the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) has projected that in the April 2012 to March 2013 consumption period, 1.63 million people in 15 mainly southern districts will be unable to adequately access food in order to meet their basic food needs.

Southern Africa: Regional Summary of 2012 SADC National Vulnerability Assessments (as of 31 July 2012)

Overview 2011/12 Crop Production Season

  • Regional cereal harvest (maize, rice, wheat, sorghum and millet) dropped by 4% in 2012 compared to 2011,but still 5% above five year average - 2012 harvest lowest in past 3 years
  • Compared to 2011 harvest, all countries experienced a decrease in cereal production except Namibia, South Africa and Tanzania, estimated to have some increases

Malawi Humanitarian Situation Update July 2012

  1. Situation Overview

The Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) annual report indicates that Malawi will for the consumption season 2012/13 will have a total of 1,630,007 people that may be at risk of food insecurity. This represents about 11 % of the population. The projected numbers of people at risk of food insecurity are in 15 districts as follows: Balaka, Blantyre, Chikwawa, Dedza, Machinga, Mangochi, Mulanje, Mwanza, Neno, Ntcheu, Nsanje Phalombe, Salima, Thyolo and Zomba.

WFP Gears Up Food Relief For Thousands In Malawi

LILONGWE –The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), along with Government and other partners, is gearing up to meet a large rise in Malawi’s food needs due to localised crop failure and high prices. Compared to the previous lean season, eight times as many Malawians will need food assistance in coming months.
