Response to Sahel Food Crisis – BFA121

Report
ACT Alliance

More than 19 million people in the Sahel region including 2.8 million from Burkina Faso are at risk of food insecurity according to FAO report1. The reason for this severe food crisis is not only caused by a prolonged drought and the subsequent severe decline of agricultural production but is also a consequence of high food prices, displacement and chronic poverty. The situation has been further worsened by the political instability in Mali and the influx of an estimated 65,0002 Malian refugees in Burkina Faso.

Hungry season in Burkina Faso

“Undi Kibaré,” I say, practicing the Moré greeting I’d learned a few minutes ago. “Lafi,” Hawa replies, breaking in to a smile as she tries to continue the conversation. I just smile with incomprehension, having exhausted my knowledge of her language. Then we both break out laughing.

It looks like any other school yard, any other school day. But it is actually the first school day in Camp Mbere, a refugee camp only a few kilometres from the Malian border in Mauritania. Suddenly a camera attracts the attention and hundreds of children sets of, screaming and laughing. Like any other children.

When Kasongo Mutshaila makes his way through the ocean of screaming children, he can´t help it but laughing. As being the representative in Mauritania Kasongo is heading the ACT Alliance LWF work camp management in camp Mbere. And he is proud.

Fatumata, 28, knocks the leaves of a thorny tree with a long metal pole and picks them up off the dry and dusty ground one by one. “We normally only feed these leaves to our animals,” she explains, “but the situation is so difficult now that we are eating them ourselves.”

When asked if there is any nutrition in them she shrugs. “No, but we don’t have any choice. It’s an obligation. It’s all there is.”

Hope resists despair in Sahel

Report
ACT Alliance

by Mara Caputo

Successful initiatives in the Sahel that span the aid-development continuum have been cultivated in the midst of mounting drought and despair, providing a blueprint for a way beyond chronic food insecurity.

The despair is born of a deepening food crisis as an estimated 12 million people concentrated primarily in the West African region of the Sahel teeter on the brink of famine. The governments of Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Chad and Niger have already declared states of emergency and called for international assistance.

The European Union says that 12 million people across five West African countries are on the brink of famine. Draught, crop failure, inadequate recovery from previous years' crises, and rising food prices have left millions without any reserves well in advance of the regular lean season and propelled the governments of Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Chad and Niger to declare states of emergency.

Preliminary Appeal for Response to Food Insecurity in Mauritania - MRT121

Report
ACT Alliance

Appeal Target: US$ 412,889

Geneva, 13 January 2012

Dear Colleagues,

The shortage of rain during 2011 has caused significant drop in agricultural production and fodder for animals in Mauritania. The Government of Mauritania together with the World Food Programme (WFP) and other agencies has carried out a food security assessment in July and October 2011 which has revealed worrying facts. Due to the poor rainfall last year, the forthcoming harvest is predicted to have a 48% decline of gross output of all combined cereals in relation to previous years.
