Contexte

• Les communes de Gossi et Ouinerdène ont subi une mauvaise campagne agro-pastorale 2016 – 2017, caractérisée par une insuffisance des pluies et leur mauvaise répartition dans le temps et dans l’espace. A ces facteurs dégradants s’ajoute, l’installation des éleveurs venus de différent horizons pour la recherche de pâturage et d’eaux.

Prolonged insecurity in the north- east of Nigeria has caused ongoing displacement with about 1.7 million internally displaced people (IDP) across three most affected states - Adamawa, Borno and Yobe. Recent assessments indicate slightly more than 1,000,000 IDPs living in host communities. Some 207,000 people have fled to neighbouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger to seek safety from violence and unrest.

Abuja, 25 July 2017 – The Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria, Edward Kallon, condemns in the strongest terms the deadly suicide attacks that took place in the Dalori I and Dalori II IDP camps in the outskirts of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on 24 July 2017, which resulted in the deaths of several civilians, including women and children, and injured many others.

These suicide attacks are the latest in the recent accelerating trend of attacks against civilians in north-east Nigeria over the past few months.

OVER 3,000 RETURNEES REGISTERED

Since the start of the year, UNHCR has registered 3,052 returnees from Cameroon and Chad. About 1,070 people returned to Nana Mambéré prefecture and 1,982 in Mambéré Kadéï prefecture in the country’s west. The spontaneous returns are due to improving security in some localities in the western part of CAR, the return of Government and some public services as well as the resumption of some mining activities.

EMERGENCY RELIEF COORDINATOR URGES FOR CONTINUED SUPPORT
United Nations Under-Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC) Stephen O’Brien arrived in CAR on 16 July for a three-day visit. On 17 July he traveled to Bangassou; a town that is emblematic of the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the country. The visit provided an opportunity for the ERC to discuss the magnitude of the crisis and make an urgent appeal to the international community not to neglect the CAR crisis.

  • In 2016, 7 million of affected people were reached by the WASH sector among more than 10 million in needs in West and Central Africa (24 countries):

    o In DRC, 2.5 million persons in cholera-prone zones benefiting from preventive as well as WASH cholera-response packages;

    o In CAR, 0.9 million of affected people were provided with access to improved sources of water and 0.3 million with sanitations facilities.

Aussi bien dans les départements d’Abala, d’Ayorou, de Banibangou que d’Ouallam, la situation est très préoccupante mais l’on ne peut pas parler d’une crise humanitaire à proprement dite. La dégradation du tissu socio-économique dans ces milieux pour une population vivant essentiellement de l’agriculture, de l’élevage et des échanges commerciaux avec le Mali est évidente, ce qui génère une précarité qui fait craindre une crise humanitaire certaine dans la zone.
