South Asia: Heat Wave - Jun 2007

Disaster description

On 14 June 2007, 57 people died across Pakistan due to exposure to intense heat, which raised the death toll to 289. The central province of Punjab, with an average temperature of 42 degrees Celsius, was hard hit by the hot and humid weather. People battled the sizzling temperatures amid frequent power outages as the country faced its worst ever energy crisis as electricity demand exceeded the supply by 2,900 megawatts. The heatwave in north and central India claimed 74 more lives on 12 June 2007 and brought the death toll 148. The heat-related deaths were reported from the national capital New Delhi and northern Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and central Madhya Pradesh states. (DPA, 12 Jun 2007)
