Deux décès sont enregistrés à Port-de-Paix, dans le Nord-Ouest : celui d’une adolescente de 17 ans et celui d’une femme, âgée de 24 ans, qui tentaient de traverser des eaux sauvages, en deux endroits différents, rapporte la Direction de protection civile, dans un relevé adressé à AlterPresse.

  • Heavy rains have fallen uninterrupted since 16 May, affecting areas still recovering from the passage of Hurricane Matthew on 4 October 2016 in the South, Grand’Anse, South-East, West and North-West departments, but also in other areas located in Artibonite and Centre departments. Several municipalities present soils 100% saturated. This has caused massive fast flooding episodes and multiple landslides.

Elicien Ladouceur, un quinquagénaire, sa femme, Rosemène, et un mineur, âgé de 15 ans, ont été tués par la foudre, le 29 avril 2017, au cours de pluies diluviennes à San Pèdre, une localité de la commune frontalière de Belladère.

This map illustrates the satellite-detected water and/or saturated wet soil extent in Solon Communal Section, St. Louis du Sud Commune in Sud Department located in the southwestern part of Haiti. The UNITAR-UNOSAT analysis used a WorldView-2 satellite image acquired on the 28 April 2017 and could observe areas with standing waters and saturated wet soil mainly affecting agricultural fields. The UNITAR-UNOSAT analysis identified 118 ha of those areas, which cover 8.50% of this map's extent of 1385 ha of land. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field.

This map illustrates the satellite-detected water extent in Cavaillon commune in Sud Department (Haiti) located in the southwestern part of Haiti. The UNITAR-UNOSAT analysis used a Sentinel-1 satellite image acquired on the 26 April 2017 and a Radarsat-2 image acquired on the 17 May 2016 and could observe areas with standing waters mainly affecting agricultural fields. The UNITAR-UNOSAT analysis identified 566 ha of flooded areas, which cover 7% of this map's extent of ~8500 ha of land. The increase of waters within the analyzed zone is about 550%.

The UNITAR-UNOSAT analysis used a Sentinel-1 satellite image acquired on the 26 April 2017 and a Radarsat-2 image acquired on the 17 May 2016 and could observe areas with standing waters mainly affecting agricultural fields. The UNITAR-UNOSAT analysis identified 718 ha of flooded areas, which cover ~4% of this map's extent of ~20300 ha of land. The increase of waters within the analyzed zone is about 460%.

The UNITAR-UNOSAT analysis used a Radarsat-2 image acquired on the 28 April 2017 and a Sentinel-1 satellite image acquired on the 26 April 2017. Between 26 and 28 April 2017 and within this map extent, waters receded from about ~590 ha of mainly agricultural lands : ~873 ha of satellite detected waters were observed on the 26 April 2017 and decreased to ~280 ha on the 28 April 2017.
