  • Number of disaster events in December 2012 increased double compared to November 2012.

Flood hits Belu regency, devastates food crops

Major flooding, following incessant rains over the last three days, has inundated at least nine villages and devastated vast areas of food crops in Belu regency, East Nusa Tenggara.

Belu Deputy Regent Lodovikus Taolin confirmed the disaster on phone on Friday, saying that the flooding was sparked by overflow from Benenain River.

According to Lodovikus, despite the flooding no major evacuation was carried out as residents, whose houses were submerged, were temporarily accommodated in their relatives' houses.

Cleaning is a never-ending chore for Linda Herawati, 25, after her home was inundated for days after the Ciliwung River overflowed onto the Rawajati district in South Jakarta.

“It has been a week since the water subsided and we haven’t finished cleaning the rooms and furniture,” she said on Thursday while feeding her 7-month-old daughter.

Linda said she had enough with the flooding, especially the recent one that caused her house to sit in 4 meters of water.

Two Agam landslide victims still missing

Two more victims of a landslide in Agam regency, West Sumatra, were still reported missing as of Thursday evening.

The missing residents have been identified as Nursidah, 65, and Padri, 9.

At around 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, rescuers found the body of P Sutan Sinaro, the 18th confirmed death caused by the natural disaster that struck the area on Sunday. Sinaro’s wife and two children were also killed in the incident.

Hundreds of houses inundated in Samarinda

Major flooding sparked by an overflow from the Karang Mumus Dam inundated hundreds of houses at Gunung Lingai village in Sungai Pinang district, Samarinda, East Kalimantan, on Wednesday.

The flooding also hit Bengkuring housing complex at Sempaja Selatan subdistrict in North Samarinda district.

“The water started inundating the area on Wednesday afternoon and at night it kept flowing,” said Lukman, one of Bengkuring residents, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Search for landslide victims continues

More than 200 rescuers are searching for six missing people in Tanjung Sani village, West Sumatra. The missing people are thought to have been buried under the mud and are feared dead.

As of Monday noon, 14 villagers had already been found dead. Mud and rocks fell on the village on Sunday around 4:45 a.m. local time. Hundreds of people were forced to flee their homes on the mountainside.

Perumnas ready to develop low-cost apartments for flood victims

State-owned house developer Perum Perumnas is ready to work with the Jakarta Special Administrative Region (Pemda DKI) to build low-cost apartments (rusun) for flood victims who live around the Ciliwung riverbanks.

“We are ready to cooperate as long as there is land to construct the low-cost apartments for the flood victims,” said Perumnas president director Himawan Arif Sugoto on the sidelines of the 2013 government work meeting at the Jakarta Convention Center on Monday.

  1. Philippines - TC Bopha (Pablo) struck the southern Philippines in early December. The risk of floods and landslides due to heavy rains persists in typhoon-affected areas hampering humanitarian activities. The revised Action Plan was launched in Manila on 25 January asking for US$76 million. A low pressure area continues to affect areas in Mindanao causing flash floods and a landslide affecting nearly 40,000 people.

16 killed in Indonesia landslides, nine missing: officials

JAKARTA, Jan 27, 2013 (AFP) - Two landslides triggered by heavy rains have killed at least 16 people and left nine others missing on Indonesia's Sumatra island, officials said Sunday.

The National Disaster Management Agency said 11 bodies were recovered and six others were injured in a landslide in Agam district in West Sumatra province early Sunday, and nine people were thought to be still buried in the debris.

Jakarta flooding highlights prevention gaps

JAKARTA, 24 January 2013 (IRIN) - Recent widespread flooding in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, highlights the need for more effective flood management.

The government's efforts to reduce perennial flooding in Jakarta have been focused on building more floodways, but this does not address fundamental problems like environmental degradation, says Marco Kusumawijaya, an urban planning expert at the Jakarta-based Rujak Centre for Urban Studies.
