The Jakarta administration is working on new solutions to cope with flooding during the capital’s increasingly unpredictable rainy season that could force private entities to play a more active role.

Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said on Wednesday that in the long run, his administration would make it an obligation for developers to build water catchment fixtures, including percolation pits, in residential areas, at shopping malls and near office buildings.

Floods submerge villages in NTB, Jambi

At least 500 hectares of rice fields in two districts in Dompu regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), are at risk of failure due to floods.

The floods that hit Dompu on Dec. 24 are still covering rice fields in four districts of Dompu and six villages in Woja as of Wednesday.

Regency spokesman Abdul Sahid said the floods from Monday were caused by the Sori Silo, Na’e and Laju rivers overflowing their banks.

Jakarta Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is seeking ways to prevent the inundation of the city’s main thoroughfares as officials warn of more flooding in the coming days.

Jokowi, who has been in office for more than two months, has ordered all related agencies to further investigate the cause of flooding in several new spots in the city.

Flood spreads throughout Jakarta

Floods have been spreading throughout Jakarta since early on Monday.

Floodwater to a depth of 2.5 meters has swamped Kampung Pulo, Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta, since 1 a.m., which the local residents believe to be the result of torrential rains in Bogor, West Java.

Bogor is upstream of several rivers in Jakarta, such as the Ciliwung and Angke, meaning that heavy rain in Bogor affects the city.

Vast rice fields at risk of crop failure due to floods

Around 10,000 hectares of rice fields on the northern coast of Cirebon regency, one of West Java’s rice production centers, are at risk of failure due to floods as the rainy, planting season, locally known as rendeng, is unusually wet.

The rice fields that are prone to floods are found in Arjawinangun, Susukan, Gegesik, Kapetakan, Panguragan, Surannggala, Gunung Jati, Ciwaringin, Mundu, Gebang and Pabedilan districts.

Two children swept away by storm water after heavy rain

Dina Armawati, 32, of Karanganyar Gunung, Candisari subdistrict, Semarang, Central Java, cried hysterically upon learning that her 7-year-old son, Qiyan Alfriano, had been swept away by gushing water in a storm drain in the village following heavy rain on Tuesday.

“What am I supposed to do, Qiyan?” Dina cried out repeatedly, so overcome with grief that she fainted several times in her home.
