Myanmar: Floods - Aug 2012

Disaster description

Heavy rain as part of the monsoon season caused flooding in many parts of Myanmar starting in the beginning of August 2012. Up to 6,000 people were left homeless after the Salween River in Karen State flooded (Mizzima News, 10 Aug 2012). The Moei River along the Thai border burst its banks following days of heavy rain (Mizzima News, 14 Aug 2012). In the Irrawaddy region, the Darka River overflowed its bank, affecting 12,000 people (Mizzima News, 14 Aug 2012). In northern Shan State flooding started on 19 Aug, killing at least one person and leaving hundreds homeless (Irrawaddy, 22 Aug 2012).
