10 people missing in eastern Nepal landslides yet to be traced

The whereabouts of around 10 people who went missing after landslides triggered by heavy rainfall hit a remote village and highway in eastern Nepal districts Satnkhuwasabha and Ilam are still not known.

Two people – Dilmaya Rai, 52, and Krishna Ghimire, 45 - have gone missing since a landslide swept away a house belonging to Som Kumar Rai in a remote Dhapu VDC in Sankhuwasabha Monday night. Rai and Ghimire, who were staying in the house as guests, are feared dead.

Early Warning in Action: Kanchanpur, Nepal

Floods and landslides pose a significant risk to a majority of communities in Nepal. The Nepal Risk Reduction Consortium Flagship 4, Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR), is focused on supporting communities reduce their vulnerability to natural disasters, particularly floods and landslides. A crucial aspect of reducing this vulnerability is ensuring a community based early warning system (EWS) is implemented and sustained for upstream and downstream communities. Mercy Corps has been a leading partner in community based early warning and CBDRR in Nepal.

Landslides claim eight people in two days in eastern Nepal

A day after six people were killed in a landslide on Mechi highway in Ilam, two more people were killed and three others went missing in a landslide that hit a remote village in Sankhuwasabha district Monday night.

The victims have been identified as Samala Rai and her brother Pratap Rai. Their age could not be verified immediately, but it is learnt that they are children of Chakra Bahadur Rai of Dhapu VDC-8.

Three people – Chakra Bahadur’s wife Dilmaya, daughter in law Usha and their neighbor Krishna Ghimre – are missing in the incident.

Four killed, 10 missing after landslide buries vehicles

The bodies of four people missing after landslides triggered by heavy rainfall buried and swept away five vehicles in Kolbung of Ilam district on Monday have been recovered from mud and debris.

The identity of the diseased could not be verified immediately Police said search and rescue personnel are engaged in finding ten others who are still said to be missing.

21 killed in Sikkim landslides

Landslides and heavy rain have killed at least 21 people in the Indian state of Sikkim.

Border Police and the Border Roads Organization (BRO) personnel were among those killed in the landslides, news reports said. Likewise, at least 10 deaths were reported in the state of Assam.

The Northern part of Sikkim is cut off from the rest of the country. Nine landslides have blocked the main road between Chungthang and Mangan, Xinhua news agency said. National Highway 31-A is also blocked.

Early Warning in Action

Every year, floods and landslides cause 300 deaths in Nepal and economic damages exceeding US $10 million. A lack of focus on investing in disaster risk reduction has put development efforts at risk. Recognising this gap, the Government of Nepal launched the Nepal Reduction Consortium (NRRC), which identified 5 flagship priorities for disaster risk reduction. Under the NRRC, Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) is a priority.

Landslide claims four lives of a family in Syanja

Four members of a family have been killed in a landslide triggered by incessant rainfall in Chandi Bhanjyang VDC-7 of Syanja district Monday night.

According to Assistant Police Inspector at Waling Police Post, Narayan Prasad Paudel, they died after the landslide buried the house of Om Prakash Subedi. His wife Saraswoti Subedi,27, daughters Akriti, 5,and Asmita, 2, and 20 days old son Govinda were buried to death.

However, Om Prakash managed to save his life by fleeing the scene after he noticed that the house was collapsing, according to the police.

500 houses inundated by rain-triggered flood in Saptari village

An outburst of Triyuga stream dam caused by rain-triggered flood has inundated Odraha VDC in Saptari district.

Odraha VDC ward no 1, 2, 3 and Bochahi of ward 4 and Banigama of ward 5 have been waterlogged after a dam along the Triyuga rivulet in Bochahi got dismantled at 5.00 am this morning, according to state-owned news agency RSS.

Around 500 houses of 200 families in the VDC have been inundated when flood water gushed into the villages, said Deependra Prasad Yadav, a local.

112 families displaced by landslides in Dolkha

As many as 112 families have been displaced due to landslides that took place in Dolkha district between mid July to mid August this year.

Majority of the displaced families are from Bhirkot VDC. As many as 24 families have been completely displaced while others have been affected partially as a result of landslides, according to state-owned news agency RSS.

Similarly, landslides completely displaced six families in Bhimeshwor Municipality and 10 other families have been partially affected.
