Colombia: Floods and Landslides - Mar 2012

Disaster description

More than 66,000 people have been affected by floods in 28 out of 32 departments, during the first six weeks of the first rainy season in 2012 (Government, 23 Apr 2012).

In July, overflowing of the rivers Guamuez, Orito, Putumayo, and Banana in Putumayo in southeastern Colombia affected over 15,000 families. The floods have increased the instability of areas contaminated by mines and destroyed warning signs. (OCHA, 3 Aug 2012)

On 16 Aug, a strong windstorm affected more than 52,000 people in Putumayo, some of which had been hit by massive flooding at the end of July. Humanitarian organizations estimate that between 35%- 40% of the department’s population have been affected by both events, the impact being worst in rural areas. (OCHA, 5 Oct 2012)
