Brazil: Floods and Landslides - Jan 2012

Disaster description

In early January, after three days of landslides, the latest reports were that 19 people lost their lives due to the rains, floods and mudslides. At least 9 homes in the town of Sapucaia, population slightly over 17,000, have been destroyed and even more homes were in danger of collapsing. (Government of Brazil, 12 Jan 2012).

In February, more than 130,000 people were affected by floods in the northern state of Acre (CARE, 2 Mar 2012).

In April, the state of emergency was declared in the state of Amazonas after flooding in Manaus (Government of Brazil, 30 Apr 2012).
