Viet Nam: Floods - Sep 2011

Disaster description

Between late September and early December 2011, the Mekong Delta region of Viet Nam experienced its worst flooding in 11 years, affecting over 600,000 people in the provinces of An Giang, Dong Thap, Long An, Can Tho, Vinh Long, Hau Giang and Kien Giang. Unlike the floods Viet Nam faces every year, these floods have been slow onset, with water covering large areas, paralysing the everyday life of affected communities and threatening their livelihoods. 85 people were killed; almost 13,000 families were evacuated due to flooding and landslides. Damage to property and livelihood was widespread and as much as 11,768 acres of rice paddies were lost. Six months on, some households made, where possible, efforts to rebuild their houses; however, many families whose houses had totally collapsed were still living in temporary shelters nearby their destroyed houses or continued to live in their bamboo houses with poor conditions.
