Thailand: Floods - Aug 2011

Disaster description

According to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) 14 provinces remain inundated. The flooding has affected 1,142,712 people from 379,274 households in 4,642 villages. The flood has killed 41 people, and one person was reported missing. (Govt. of Thailand, 24 Aug 2011)

Weeks of torrential rains poured, prompting rivers to swell before eventually overflowing. Excess river water gushed into neighboring refugee camps in the Mae Hongson province, destroying hundreds of temporary shelters and causing substantial destruction. (ADRA, 2 Sep 2011) Mae Ra Ma Luang and Mae La Oon camps were badly affected, forcing more than 2,000 people to flee their homes. (Thailand Burma Border Consortium, 8 Aug 2011)
