Climate Change: Natural disasters made history in 2011

JOHANNESBURG, 27 November 2012 (IRIN) - Many of the worst natural disasters of 2011 were also the most severe the affected countries had ever experienced, revealed the Global Climate Risk Index (CRI) 2013, which was released in Doha today.

Brazil, Cambodia, El Salvador, Laos and Thailand appear in the CRI’s 10 most-affected countries; all recorded their severest natural hazards-related catastrophes in 2011.

The Year that Shook the Rich: A Review of Natural Disasters in 2011

This Review analyzes some of the major events and trends related to natural disasters and humanitarian disaster response in 2011.

2011 was the most expensive year in terms of disaster losses in history, mostly because of a spate of disasters affecting developed countries. Globally, the ecnonomic cost of disasters in 2011 was $380 billion, of which $210 billion were the result of the earthquake and tsunmai in Japan. This was 72 percent higher than the losses in 2005, the second costliest year in history of disaster-related losses.

Aid planes, mudslides and war: Save the Children’s busiest year

2011 has been the busiest year for Save the Children’s Humanitarian Emergencies team in our 90-year history: 45 emergency responses, in 38 different countries. We’re really very tired.

But the first few days of an emergency are critical. It’s simple. It’s life and death. The faster we respond, the more lives we save.

This year we flew aid planes into conflict zones, faced a nuclear threat in Japan, and launched responses in the aftermath of countless floods, droughts and earthquakes.

Llega ayuda oficial a estado brasileño afectado por lluvias

Unas tres toneladas de medicamentos llegan este martes al estado brasileño de Santa Catarina, duramente castigado por las intensas lluvias de la semana pasada, que provocaron tres muertos y casi un millón de damnificados.

El Ministerio de Salud indicó que en la remesa oficial van antibióticos, analgésicos, sales de rehidratación, vendas y otros productos de primeros auxilios, para atender unas 18 mil personas durante un mes, reporta Prensa Latina.

Reportan 10 personas fallecidas y más de 13 mil damnificados por lluvias en Brasil

Caracas, 19 Jul. AVN .- El número de muertes causadas por las fuertes lluvias que se registran desde el pasado viernes en los estados brasileños de Pernambuco y Paraíba subió este martes a 10, en tanto que cerca de 13 mil 300 personas han perdido sus casas o han tenido que abandonarlas.

De acuerdo con una nota divulgada por La Radio del Sur, este martes falleció un bebé de dos meses, quien quedó sepultado luego del desplome de la vivienda en la que vivía con su familia en Puxinaná, ciudad en el interior de Paraíba.

ADRA Feeds Families Displaced by Floods

SILVER SPRING, Md. - Several days of heavy rains in the Northern state of Roraima, Brazil has led to severe flooding causing the Brazilian Civil Defense to declare a state of emergency in seven cities. More than 355,000 people have been affected by the flood, which has displaced tens of thousands of people. The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is responding to the humanitarian needs of flood victims, providing them with much needed food rations.

Guyana: Sand Creek hardest hit in Region 9 - Prime Minister

-water level stabilizes as rains ease

Georgetown, GINA, June 6, 2011

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds in an update on the flood situation in Region Nine told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that it appears that the rise in the water level has been more or less stabilized with some areas showing a little increase and others a slight decrease.

“We’re hoping that the rain will slow for a couple of weeks and, the water level will come down,” he added.
