Disaster description

Floods triggered by monsoon rains that start over Kerala and cover the rest of India by mid-July have affected more than 2,500,000, killed more than 130 across the country. West Bengal, Bihar, Kerala are the most affected. (Govt of India, 10 Jul 2011)

Since late August, the monsoon season flooding has affected more than 10 million people in Assam, Bihar, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) launched a domestic appeal for 176 million Indian rupees (approx. 3.3 million Swiss francs or 3.8 million US dollars) to assist people in the worst affected areas.
