Training to tackle flood-related mishaps

PATIALA: Even as the Patiala district administration is yet to start any major effort to train residents of flood affected areas to tackle the calamity, a city-based NGO, Society for Peoples' Welfare & Awareness, Patiala (SPWAP) has decided to organize a three-day special training camp in BN Khalsa School from June 27 to train residents to tackle flood-related mishaps.

Hansi-Butana wall worries Punjab villagers

SANGRUR: As if a swelling Ghaggar during monsoons was not enough for causing damage, the construction of a 10-foot high concrete wall along the Hansi-Butana canal in Haryana is also expected to severely affect people living near the seasonal river.

The residents of about two dozen villages situated near Ghaggar`s banks are a worried lot because of the construction.

They have decided to approach state and Union authorities against this.

The persistence of a low pressure in the Bay of Bengal brought heavy rains in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry from mid November 2010. The months November and December mark the monsoon period but this was quite different from the usual, with continuing low pressures resulting in sustained rains for more than two weeks. Even districts which do not normally get much monsoon rain have received substantial rains this time. These heavy rains and subsequent flooding and landslides have created serious damage and displacement, rendering thousands of people homeless.

India food inflation returns to double-digits

NEW DELHI - India's food price inflation has returned to double-digits, fuelled by surging onion prices, official data showed Thursday, adding to pressure on the scandal-hit Congress government.

Food inflation jumped close to three percentage points to 12.13 percent for the week ending December 11 from the same period a year earlier, according to commerce ministry figures.

The government, wary of the potential political fallout from soaring onion prices, has gone on a virtual war footing to bring down the cost of the vegetable, an Indian dietary staple

- Sustained heavy rains over the course of several weeks have resulted in water logging and flooding across several coastal districts of the state of Tamil Nadu. The situation further deteriorated following continuous heavy rainfall between the 4th and 6th of December 2010.

India: Govt sanctions Rs 500cr flood relief, seeks Central aid

CHENNAI: Even as rains gave some respite to Tamil Nadu after battering the state for days, the state cabinet on Tuesday sanctioned Rs 500 crore for providing immediate relief to victims for loss of life and shelter, besides compensation for destruction of crops and temporary restoration of damaged roads, lakes and tanks.

Floods uproot tens of thousands in India's Tamil Nadu

NEW DELHI (AlertNet) - Floods triggered by heavy rains in southern India have killed around 180 people and forced tens of thousands to seek refuge in government relief camps, officials and aid workers said on Monday.

The northeast monsoon - which hits southern parts of the country from October to December - has been heavier than normal this year, forcing authorities to release large volumes of water from reservoirs in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The Copenhagen meeting also confirmed the need for action to mitigate and adapt to climate change. India has recently signed the Copenhagen accord, agreeing to work with other nations to address the issues and threats posed by climate change.
