1. CONTEXT

The Pacific region features among the most disaster prone regions in the world in terms of recurrence, severity and scope of hazards, with high exposure to cyclones, earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, tidal surges, landslides, flash floods, drought, forest fires, volcano eruptions, as well as epidemics. This is compounded by environmental degradation and climate change.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA: Tackling clan conflict

GOROKA, 7 January 2011 (IRIN) - Clan violence is widespread in Papua New Guinea (PNG), where arguments over women, pigs and land can easily spiral into murder, mayhem and civil conflict.

In the volatile Eastern Highlands Province, an estimated 400 people die each year in violence - mostly sparked by land disputes.

During one dispute that lasted 16 years over a coffee plantation in Daulo District, houses were regularly set ablaze and crops destroyed. Six people were killed.

Pacific Cyclone and Precipitation Outlook 2010-2011

*The Pacific region is currently experiencing the weather phenomenon La Niña, which is projected to continue into February - April 2011. La Niña typically affects the distribution of rain and tropical cyclones across the region. Children die in PNG floods

Four children have died and two others are missing after their homes were washed away by severe flooding in Papua New Guinea. Police say the Weimaori River in Central Province broke its banks, destroying six homes. Rescuers are still at the scene searching for the bodies of two young girls.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA: Residents coping with rising flood waters - for now

PORT MORESBY, 25 May 2010 (IRIN) - An estimated 20,000 people in remote parts of East Sepik Province, northwestern Papua New Guinea, have been affected by floods - the worst in 40 years - along the Sepik River since late March, but residents have been able to sustain themselves with minimum levels of outside support thanks to traditional coping mechanisms.

Worst affected were Angoram, Ambunti and Wosara-Gowi districts.
