Sri Lanka: Floods - May 2010

Disaster description

In May 2010 Sri Lanka experienced the worst floods in decades, caused by exceptionally high pre-monsoon rainfall over a short period of time. The districts of Colombo and Gampaha suffered the most from the floods. The Colombo District saw the most number of people displaced, while Gampaha incurred the highest flood damages in terms of physical damages to assets and economic losses. Over 693,000 people were affected, and 101 temporary shelters were set up to house 22,291 displaced people. (Govt, UNDP, GFDDR, 31 Dec 2012).
