GENEVA (ILO News) - The Government of Brazil and the International Labour Organization (ILO) have announced the launch of a three-year programme aimed at enhancing the capacity of countries to respond to social and natural disasters.

The joint programme - to be developed by the ILO Training Centre in Turin - will seek to improve the capacity-building of countries in humanitarian assistance, train them on the prevention of natural and social disasters, and help them deal with post-crisis recoveries.

Summary: CHF 68,271 was allocated from the IFRC's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 27 January 2010 to support the Palestine Red Crescent Society deliver assistance to some 1,500 beneficiaries and to replenish disaster preparedness stocks in sight of future heavy rains.

Thanks to the activities funded through this DREF allocation, the Palestine Red Crescent Society effectively assisted 1,437 persons affected by the floods by mobilizing its volunteers and its prepositioned stocks of non-food items.

Summary: CHF 68,271 was allocated from the IFRC's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 27 January 2010 to support the National Society in delivering assistance to some 1,500 beneficiaries1 and to replenish disaster preparedness stocks in sight of future heavy rains.

Thanks to the activities included in the DREF allocation, Palestine Red Crescent Society (Palestine RC) was better prepared to face the new heavy rains that hit Gaza during the last days of February. Both the training of new volunteers and the production of information materials have proven to be useful.

Ramallah, West Bank, March 7, 2010 - CHF International, with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), will respond to emergency infrastructure repairs at the YWCA of Ramallah following extensive damages to the first floor resulting from heavy rains in late February. Flooding caused the collapse of one of the walls, and the loss of all furniture and equipment on the first floor.

The site, which is used for the Vocational Training Center of the YWCA of Ramallah, offers courses and programs to 60 full-time students.

The United Arab Emirates Red Crescent (UAERC) yesterday despatched to Gaza a convoy of sugar and flour worth 2 million dirhams (approximately $540,000), in an operation coordinated between the UAERC, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), and the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC).

The UAERC was responding to an urgent appeal by the UN Agency for food to ease the plight of the refugees of Gaza.

GAZA, 28 January 2010 (IRIN) - Thousands of Gazans made homeless by Israel's 23-day military assault on the Gaza Strip which ended just over a year ago, are still in tents and damaged buildings; cold weather and recent flash floods have exacerbated their plight, say aid workers and the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).

Heavy rain and flooding on 25 January badly hit tented communities in Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza; al-Mughraqa, a town 6km southwest of Gaza City; and Ezbet Abed-Rabbo, east of Jabalia town in northern Gaza, said Hamas officials.

WAM Abu Dhabi, 26th Jan. 2010 (WAM) -- The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) will dispatch tomorrow an aid convoy to Gaza Strip through the Rafah Border Crossing to relieve people affected by recent floods.

RCA Chairman Ahmed Humaid Al Mazrouie said the convoy is carrying food and medical supplies worth Dh 3 million to meet basic needs of people there.

The recent floods, he said, had aggravated the suffering of Gazans and the RCA saw it is necessary to act urgently by launching a humanitarian programme to meet their living and heath needs.

Shocking. That's all that can be said of the sight al Mughraqa, Gaza, an area severely affected by the flooding that devastated areas of Gaza on Monday. Most of the residents of Mughraqa, near Nuseirat camp, are refugees with no land of their own. Many live in temporary shelters or tents with the sheep, camels, chicken and other livestock on whose produce they depend. Nuzha Al Rash survived Monday's floods, along with her husband Fayez and four children.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) declares a state of emergency on Monday (Jan 18, 2010) to cope with severe weather conditions which have resulted in significant damages in the Gaza Valley due to floods.

Since the first moment of the flooding, and through its operations room, the PRCS has dispatched its teams and volunteers to the flooded area to evacuate dozens of affected residents and to search for the missing ones.

The Society's teams have evacuated many trapped families in the areas of the Al Mughraqa, Nuseirat camp, and Hajar Al Deik.

TEL AVIV, 20 January 2010 (IRIN) - Heavy rain and flooding has forced hundreds of people from their homes in Khan Younis in the south of the Gaza Strip, according to the Gaza authorities.
