Executive Summary

Introduction

Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world with a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of USD 520. For the past two decades Burkina Faso has enjoyed social and political stability and has made some progress on democratisation and economic and social reforms. Regular elections have been held, without major incidents, since the adoption of the Constitution in 1991.

New water reservoirs will help prevent drought and famine

In order to ensure food production in the arid Burkina Faso you need to be able to store water between the rain periods. The small-scale water reservoirs are therefore important for people in rural areas and more drain-off reservoirs will be repaired and new ones will be built under the Sida-funded water reservoirs project.

D’un coût de plus de six milliards de F CFA financés par la BOAD, ces premiers aménagements dits prioritaires, sont l’aboutissement d’une étude technique commanditée en 2008 par le ministère de l’Habitat et de l’Urbanisme pour apporter des solutions aux difficultés d’écoulement des eaux pluviales dans la ville de Ouagadougou.

Review of the IFRC-led Shelter Cluster: Burkina Faso September 2009 Floods Response

Executive Summary

In October 2009 IFRC provided shelter coordination support to Burkina Faso as part of the response to the sudden floods that took place on the night of 31 st August to 1 st September 2009 and affected approximately 150,000 people. Answering a request by the UN Resident Coordinator in Burkina Faso, the IFRC promptly sent a Coordinator to support the coordination efforts of the shelter sector group.

Summary: Heavy and persistent seasonal rainfall in late August and early September 2009 throughout the country affected an estimated 150,000 people. Initial reports indicated that nine people died, 48,000 were without shelter and were living in temporary facilities, and over 1,000 persons were injured. In addition to the immediate human toll, considerable losses or damage to household materials, crops, livestock, and basic infrastructure (roads, bridges, factories, hospitals and dams) were recorded. Plan teams are on the ground providing vital aid and support to thousands of children and their families struggling to cope with floods across several African countries - including Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau and Sudan.

Burkina Faso has been hardest hit with more than 87,000 people affected and 15 dead. Plan's Sanmatenga and Namentenga programme areas in the central northern regions of the country have been severely affected, and 4 communities in Namentenga remain inaccessible.

BAD-Burkina - Signature d'accords de don et de prêt de 20,80 milliards de FCFA pour le programme de réduction de la pauvreté

Le Groupe de la Banque et le gouvernement du Burkina Faso ont signé, jeudi 22 juillet 2010 à Tunis, deux protocoles d'accord d'un montant total de 20,80 milliards de FCFA pour financer le Cinquième programme d'appui à la stratégie de réduction de la pauvreté (PASRP V) au pays.

Il s'agit d'un accord de don de 10 millions d'unités de compte (environ 7,80 milliards de FCFA) et d'un accord de prêt de 16,6 millions d'unités de compte* (environ 13 milliards de FCFA) pour fiancer le programme.

La gestion du relogement des sinistrés du 1er septembre 2009 était au centre de débats en l'Assemblée nationale le 14 mai 2010 suite à une question orale du député Tiemtoré Salifou. A travers cette interpellation au Gouvernement, le député Tiemtoré Salifou voulait avoir une situation nette sur le nombre de parcelles dégagées à ce jour, le bilan de la distribution de matériaux de construction et des difficultés rencontrées. En outre, il voulait aussi à travers sa question, savoir si l'opération pourra prendre fin avant le début de la saison pluvieuse.
