Solomon Islands: Floods - Feb 2009

Disaster description

From 29 January, a weeklong intensive and persistent rainfall caused major damage in the northwest Guadalcanal area from Tamboko to Maravovo (Sahalu ward), which affected an estimated 7,000 people. Ten deaths were confirmed in western Guadalcanal, where heavy rain and steep terrain combined and caused flash floods. Initial assessment reports highlighted damage primarily to food gardens and water supplies. Damage to other infrastructure was limited but several key bridges suffered damage, which necessitated the transportation of supplies to the worst affected areas by sea. (IFRC, 16 Feb 2009)

On 5 February, the Government of Solomon Islands officially requested for international assistance. (OCHA, 6 Feb 2009)
