Summary:

Throughout the Yemen floods operation, the initial difficulties faced due to lack of local capacities were overcome by strengthening the Seyoun branch of the Yemen RC in Wadi Hadramout. Approximately 3,000 families (around 21,000 beneficiaries) received food and non-food items (NFIs), shelter, and water and sanitation assistance from the Yemen RC during the emergency phase.

Further to the ones conducted by the field assessment and coordination team (FACT), the Seyoun branch conducted a number of assessments to collect more information on the needs and vulnerabilities

Emergency Aid Reaches Gaza

The recent war on Gaza caused great suffering among the 1.5 Palestinians who live there. The UN estimated that at one point during the war 500,000 people were displaced from their homes. Some 4,000 dwellings were destroyed, forcing homeless families with nowhere else to go to live in tents.

RCA takes delivery of lands for Khalifa housing city in Yemen

WAM Sanaa, 7th Dec. 2009 (WAM) -- A total of 750 out of 1000 plots for building the Sheikh Khalifa housing project for victims of floods that swept governorates of Hadramout and Al-Mahra in Yemen at the end of last year have been handed out to the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA), Yemeni Minister of Public Works and RoadS Omar Al Karshami announced today.

He said during a meeting today with the visiting RCA Secretary General, Mohammed Khalifa Al Qamzi, that the remaining sites would be delivered within the coming two weeks.

Yemen: National and Local Organizations trained on logistical procedures within development and disasters contexts

SANA'A, Nov. 11 - Thirty three representatives from thirteen national and local organizations based in Sana'a, Aden, Hadramout and Sa'ada learned about logistical operations generally and specifically around times of humanitarian situations caused by disasters last week.

The organizations were part of Oxfam-GB Yemen Program's partners of the good governance, women empowerment, health and humanitarian programs. The training was carried out by international logistical experts led by Rebecca Vince, Supply and Logistics Advisor at Oxfam Great Britain.

Background

WFP in Yemen commissioned a Secondary Data Analysis (SDA) to consolidate information available from a variety of sources on food and nutrition security to provide an initial analysis that identifies areas where food insecurity indicators converge. The SDA identifies gaps in secondary information to be filled by primary data collection and makes recommendations as to how these gaps might be addressed. Landslide kills 11 in Yemen

SANAA, Aug 28, 2009 (AFP) - A landslide killed 11 members of a single family when a large rock destroyed their three-storey home west of the Yemeni capital, the official Saba news agency said on Friday.

The rock was dislodged from a hill overlooking the village of Modawar, in the province of Mahwit, around 80 kilometres (50 miles) from Sanaa.

Heavy downpours over the past few days had left the ground waterlogged, the news agency said.

Neighbouring houses were also destroyed in the landslide but they were vacant and no casualties were reported.

WFP hunger hotspots: Yemen - 28 Aug 2009

WFP is expanding its operation to respond to the deteriorating humanitarian and security situation. The new planning figure is 150,000 persons while the previous 100,000.

On 16 August, 35 mt of HEB were airlifted to Sana'a from Dubai.

The humanitarian country team is elaborating a flash appeal for Sa'ada.WFP continues to face a total shortfall of US$20 million, some 36 percent of the overall US$55 million required in 2009. The shortfall will increase further as WFP expands the Sa'ada operation.
