The International Federation's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) is a source of un-earmarked money created by the Federation in 1985 to ensure that immediate financial support is available for Red Cross Red Crescent response to emergencies. The DREF is a vital part of the International Federation's disaster response system and increases the ability of National Societies to respond to disasters.

Executive summary

The East Africa Sub Zone works with and coordinates programmes in five National Societies namely Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi Red Cross Societies. The five countries share a number of commonalities. They share borders and are all members of the East Africa Community, share a turbulent past characterized by internal conflicts, population movements, devastating droughts and floods as well as a myriad of health emergencies.

Executive summary

The Eastern Africa Zone covers 14 National Societies (NS) - Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. The Zone has four country representations in Somalia, Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia and two Sub Zones covering the Indian Ocean Islands and East Africa countries.

Burundi: Heavy rains leave families homeless and in need of aid

BUJUMBURA, 14 October 2008 (IRIN) - Hundreds of families are without assistance in the northwestern province of Cibitoke after heavy rains damaged houses and crops, officials said.

The administrator of the Mabayi commune in Cibitoke, Jean-Marie Vianney Hategekimana, said exact figures were not available, adding: "We are still assessing the damage and the needs of the population."

Early in October, residents of the communes of Bukinanyana and Murwi, also in Cibitoke, suffered heavy losses following torrential rains.

Some 200 hundred houses were damaged

Burundi : Des pluies diluviennes ont endommagé les maisons, écoles et plantations en province Bubaza

Dans la soirée de ce dimanche le 5/10/08, des pluies diluviennes ont endommagé des maisons, écoles et plantations dans la province de Bubanza apprend-on de notre observateur en province de Bubanza.

Beaucoup d'écoles en construction qui n'étaient pas encore couvertes ont étaient démolies et d'autres ont eu leurs toitures emportées par des vents violents sur la colline de Rweyo en commune Rugazi et à Mitakataka en commune Bubanza. Ce sont 3 écoles qui sont tombées suite à ces pluies tandis qu'à Cona une toiture a été emportée par des vents violents.
