Dear Colleagues,

Torrential rains and strong winds swept the Eastern part of Romania from September 5 - 7, affecting in particular the counties of Galati, Vrancea, Bacau and Vaslui in the Moldavia province. Nine people lost their lives to the floods, while 13,800 houses were flooded, resulting in the evacuation of 4,116 people and the complete destruction of 900 houses. Water wells were polluted, bridges destroyed and national and county roads damaged. Official reports estimate that the total damage amounts to $300 million US.

Flood warning extended to three-quarter of Romania

BUCHAREST, Sept 11, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Romania's Environment Ministry extended on Tuesday the Yellow Code warning for floods to 28 of the 41 counties of the Carpathian country.

The ministry issued on Monday a Yellow Code in 19 counties.

Flood may hit these counties following the heavy rainfalls forecast for the interval Sept. 11 - 14, according to the Operative Center for Emergencies of the Environment Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development.

Flood death toll hits 7 in Romania, Danube rising

BUCHAREST, Sept 7 (Reuters) - The number of dead from floods in eastern Romania rose to seven on Friday with one person still missing, authorities said after torrential rains ceased.

Heavy rains have washed away dozens of homes in Vrancea, Bacau and Vaslui counties since Wednesday, forcing hundreds out of their homes.

"The death toll has risen to seven people, one is still missing and 1,391 persons were evacuated," said deputy interior minister Victor Dobre.
