Executive summary

The five countries of the Southern Cone - Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay - are highly exposed to a combination of factors such as floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, droughts, health emergencies, densely populated urban areas, political instability and internal disturbances that exacerbate the vulnerabilities of large poor and marginalized populations. This situation, combined by high levels of inequity and lack of access to basic services, makes communities more vulnerable and sets a major humanitarian challenge, which is addressed

Record number of UN emergency missions in the Americas

UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination teams' response in 2007

(New York/Geneva, 26 December 2007): In 2007, the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) teams conducted nine missions to the Americas, the highest in the history of the teams, including the first-ever mission to Mexico. Previously, the highest number of missions to the Americas was eight, after Hurricanes Mitch and Georges in 1998.

Since the end of 2006, several natural disasters have affected food and cash crop production in Latin America and the Caribbean. Their impact on rural development and food security has been varied. Uruguay: Durazno agiliza la construcción de viviendas para evacuados

Durazno comenzó la recuperación del Departamento, lo cual significará una inversión de 6 millones de dólares. En tanto, se trabaja en la refacción de las casas afectadas por las inundaciones, para lo cual entregó 80 canastas de materiales y se agilizará la construcción de 78 viviendas en cooperativas por ayuda mutua del MVOTMA.

El Coordinador del Comité Departamental de Emergencia, José Pedro Rodríguez, señaló que la situación del departamento se encuentra totalmente controlada, pero que el trabajo más arduo será proporcionar las viviendas a las personas que quedaron sin ellas.

Uruguay: Floods OCHA Situation Report No. 4

SITUATION OVERVIEW

1. On May 23rd, the National Emergency System (SNE in Spanish), reported that there still exist 1,383 affected persons (434 adults and 539 minors) from the following areas: Durazno 708, Mercedes 201, Villa Soriano 4 and Treinta y Tres 470. Of the 12,000 affected people since May 10th, 10,600 have returned to their homes voluntarily

SITUATION OVERVIEW

Since 1959 Uruguay has been affected by floods; the damage caused by this year's unusually heavy rains and the resulting flooding has been extensive, affecting nine departments; the Departments of Durazno, Soriano and Treinta y Tres have been the most affected. Worst floods in 50 years displace thousands in Uruguay

NEW YORK, USA, 22 May 2007 - Unusually heavy rains in Uruguay have caused the worst flooding to hit the country in 50 years. Since 8 May, more than 110,000 people have been affected by the emergency, most of them children, women and elderly living in poor communities.

Seven of the country's 19 provinces have been affected, with three central ones - Durazno, Soriano and Treinta y Tres - suffering the worst. Here, a week of heavy rain has also caused landslides and rivers to break their banks. In Durazno, the River Yi was 14 meters above its average height.

Spain sends Uruguay $150,000 in flood aid

MADRID, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Spain has offered Uruguay 150,000 U.S. dollars to help rebuild houses destroyed by floods that have hit much of the country.

Uruguay: Treinta y tres comenzó reconstrucción tras inundaciones

El Intendente de Treinta y Tres Gerardo Amaral señaló que la mayoría de los afectados por la crecida de los ríos finalizó la etapa de retorno y ahora comienza su reinserción social y económica.

En esta etapa muchos de los afectados tienen su situación económica comprometida, se trata de pequeños empresarios que con las inundaciones sus establecimientos, maquinaria y materia prima quedaron bajo agua y por ende las perdidas fueron totales.

SOS Children's Villages supports flood victims in Uruguay

Some 12,000 people in central Uruguay were forced to leave their homes on 10 May following the worst floods to hit the country in half a century.
