Programme summary: Disaster Management programme: Special attention was given to preparedness and risk reduction in terms of training, contingency planning, partnerships and forums for information sharing and early warning. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the implementation of climate change initiatives in the Zone was concluded with the RCRC Climate Change Centre in Netherlands. In addition, a joint annual planning forum was held in collaboration with the Health and Care Department.

Appeal coverage: 20%;

Outstanding needs: CHF 776,938 (USD 722,552 or EUR 481,702)

A total of CHF 93,000 was allocated from the Federation's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) for the recovery assessment and immediate response.

Summary: The affected communities in Shinyanga and Dodoma have continued recovering and rebuilding their homes. Rift Valley Fever outbreaks have not been reported since April 2007.

Appeal coverage: 15.4%;

Outstanding needs: CHF 820,047 (USD 681,668 or EUR 498,812).

Summary: Tanzania Red Cross National Society (TRCNS) volunteers were mobilized to distribute health and shelter relief items, targeting beneficiaries in Shinyanga, Mwanza, Dodoma, Tabora and Iringa. Most Red Cross volunteers and community workers involved in disseminating messages on Rift Valley Fever (RVF) have received training.

Rift Valley Fever, a rare zoonotic viral disease, has claimed 155 lives in Kenya and caused huge losses of income in Kenya's pastoralist communities. The outbreak of the disease has exacerbated an already precarious food insecurity and livelihoods situation, following the massive floods in Kenya and neighbouring countries at the end of 2006. A large number of animals were lost to the disease.

CCF recognized at White House for malaria eradication efforts

Tanzania: Floods cause havoc in Hanang, Babati districts

Manyara regional authorities have appealed for assistance to hundreds of people surrounded by water following heavy rains which have destroyed houses and cut off vital roads.

Reports from the region say several lakes have overspilled due to torrential rains, flooding townships,villages and crop fields.

The New Year started in Arusha with fresh outbreaks of cholera and by January 8, eight victims had been admitted at Levolosi health centre which had also been designated a cholera camp.

The Municipal Medical Officer, Dr. Solomon Ole Logilunore told the Arusha Times that the epidemic was still a threat in Arusha. Four cases were reported on January 1; five on January2 , six patients on January 5, six on January 7 and four on January 8, all coming from within the municipality and the Arumeru areas bordering the municipality.

Tanzania: Plea for aid after villagers cut off by floods

DAR ES SALAAM, 27 December (IRIN) - Some 650 flood-affected Tanzanians are in need of urgent aid, officials said on Wednesday.

The victims have been cut off from the rest of the country after floods destroyed bridges on roads connecting their communities in the central region of Shinyanga.

"They need food, medicine, blankets and other relief supplies," Shing'wela Limbakise, the executive director of Kishapu district in the region, told IRIN. "You can only reach these people by helicopter."

Velocity of Cyclone Bondo drops: Tanzania meteorological agency

DAR ES SALAAM, Dec 26, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The impact of Tropical Cyclone Bondo is expected to diminish as wind speed recorded on Monday in Dar es Salaam international airport declined, according to a statement from the Tanzania Meteorological Agency on Tuesday.

The wind was reported to be blowing at 45 km per hour.

The statement predicted that there would be mild rainfalls accompanied by winds in many parts of the country. But people in the coastal and northern regions of the country were still warned of heavy rains and strong winds.

Tanzania: Aid reaches flood-hit area

DAR ES SALAAM, 5 Dec 2006 (IRIN) - Relief supplies have been sent to an estimated 1,500 people uprooted by floods in Tanzania's central region of Shinyanga last week, officials said on Tuesday.

"By Sunday, about 300 tonnes of maize flour had been distributed in the affected villages," said Simon Sirro, Shinyanga Regional Police Commander. The floods claimed the life of one person and affected 177 households.

President Jakaya Kikwete visited the region on Saturday and ordered immediate distribution of relief to those affected.
