The Danish Government has pledged today to provide nearly US$ 1 million (DKK 4.8 million) to help Mekong countries counter the effects of climate change.

The funding will go towards helping Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam; the four Member Countries of the Mekong River Commission (MRC), to work together to mitigate the effects of changes in weather patterns that scientists say are expected over the coming decades in the Mekong River Basin.

"The people of the Mekong Basin are perhaps uniquely vulnerable to the impact of climate change, which

State of Mekong Basin good but future developments bring both risks and opportunities says MRC report

Hau Hin, Thailand

A report released by the Mekong River Commission (MRC) reveals good news for the general health of the Mekong Basin, but warns that this and the eco-systems of the river system could be threatened by proposed infrastructure and expanding populations.

Cambodia: IOM maps vulnerability of indigenous people

IOM this week presented the findings of a six-month assessment conducted in the remote provinces of Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri bordering Viet Nam and the Lao PDR.

Most of the population in the two provinces is composed of ethnic minority groups, who have traditionally relied on the forests and natural resources to meet their food and livelihood needs.

But rapid economic change now poses a threat to their traditional livelihoods and is making them increasingly vulnerable to natural hazards.

Adapting to climate change in the water sector

ODI background note

By Alan Nicol and Nanki Kaur

Water is the key medium that links atmospheric temperature rises to changes in human and physical systems.

Climate change will alter the hydrological cycle in many ways. The trigger is the warming of the atmosphere and oceans, which will change major weather systems. This will alter the temporal and spatial patterns of rainfall with consequences for runoff, surface and groundwater storage, river flow regimes and, it is estimated, greater likelihood of extremes - droughts and floods - in different parts of the world.

Action Aid: Our work in the Cambodia slum communities

The normality of their behaviour belies the problems they face. Every year during the rainy season from September to January, the Chamroeun community located in Meanchey district, Phnom

Floods kill 4, displace 40,000 in Cambodia

Phnom Penh_(dpa) _ At least 40,000 people have fled flooding across Cambodia and authorities reported at least four dead as they scrambled to obtain information from remote areas on the extent of the damage Friday.
Heavy rains across the country combined with flash flooding have cut highways and forced residents to leave newly planted rice fields and run for higher ground, according to Keo Vy, secretary to National Disaster Committee deputy chief, Nhim Vanda.
