Sudan: Floods Appeal No. MDRSD002 Final Report

Beneficiaries assisted: About 32,000 flood-affected households (some 160,000 people).

Summary:

This Emergency Appeal was launched on 18 August 2006 for CHF 607,487 (USD 491,136 or EUR 384,006) for six months to assist 3,000 households (15,000 people) affected by the flooding.

On 14 September 2006, in light of the new information gathered through the assessments, a revised plan of action was published, the appeal budget was revised to CHF 2,017,353 (USD 1,642,528

Sudan - White Nile return operation resumes

An IOM operation to provide return assistance to some 10,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from South Sudan's provinces of Eastern, Central and Western Equatoria is due to resume next week when a first group of some 350 IDPs will board an IOM chartered ferry that will take them on an 18-hour long journey up the White Nile from Juba to Bor, in Jonglei State.

The operation, which last year helped some 3,000 vulnerable IDPs return to their homeland in Bor County, was suspended in June because of the onslaught of the rainy season.

Sudan: The struggle against the River Nile

As the waters of the Nile recede slowly in and around Khartoum, the 15,000 residents of Tuti Island - located in the confluence of the White and Blue Nile rivers - are inspecting the damage done by the recent flooding in the rivers.

It could have been worse - much worse, as families in other parts of the country are finding out the hard way. It is now estimated that more than 90 thousand people have been affected by the floods that have devastated large tracts of land in Sudan over the last few weeks.

Sudan: Fear of cholera and malaria as floodwaters recede

Authorities in Khartoum fear that the ongoing flooding in Sudan will lead to further outbreaks of cholera and malaria, further aggravating the plight of more than 90 thousand people who have been affected by the flooding since the beginning of August. The Sudanese Red Crescent, supported by the International Federation, is now revising its preliminary emergency appeal that should be issued in the next few days.

Human Rights unit suggests amendments to human rights bill

The Human Rights Section of the U.N. Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) proposed amendments to a draft bill on human rights, one that had been produced by the Southern Sudan Human Rights Commission. The suggested amendments, submitted to the Director of Legislation and Contracts in the Ministry of Legal Affairs and Constitutional Development, were aimed at bringing the draft bill more into conformity with best practices adopted by other nations' human rights commissions.

Sudan: Relief for flood victims in Khartoum State

World Vision has distributed non-food items to 450 flood-affected households in the areas of Dar al Salaam and Mayo near Khartoum city.

Among the non-food items distributed by World Vision was plastic sheeting, cooking kits and jerry cans.

Heavy rains in August led to widespread destruction in the area. Houses there are made of mud and are therefore particularly vulnerable to floods. Some of the affected population lost both their houses and belongings and are now homeless.
