1. Country and Sector Background

Croatia, similar to other countries in the South Eastern and Central Europe, is exposed to a range of natural hazards, particularly, floods, wildfires, earthquakes, extreme temperatures, strong winds, and drought. The country shows warming, drying climate conditions, a trend which together with human activities enhances the risk of forest fires. Wildfires have been particularly dangerous along the Adriatic coast in recent years; in 2007 alone, 2,700 wildfires were reported on the coast.

EU Solidarity Fund: Commission proposes € 15 million of aid for regions in Hungary hit by severe floods

Brussels, 1 December 2006 - The European Commission today proposed to grant aid from the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) totalling € 15.06 million to help to deal with the consequences of the flood disaster that severely hit Hungary earlier this year. The money will be used to reimburse a part of the cost of emergency measures such as rescue services, the cleaning up of disaster stricken areas and the restoration of basic infrastructures to working condition.

Czech Rep.: About Kc60m from EIB to cover spring flood damage -- government

Prague - The Finance Ministry proposed to use about Kc60m from a European Investment Bank EIB loan to cover damage caused by spring floods, and the government approved the proposal at its session today.

It is the rest of the money from the loan the EIB provided to remove flood damage in 2002.

The Czech Republic was granted a total of EUR400m (about Kc11.2bn) for the purpose in 2002.

A discussion of the Housing Fund budget draft for 2007 was interrupted at the request of Premier Jiri Paroubek.

Hungary: 3.1 billion for reconstruction

At its session today the Government approved subsidies of HUF 3.1 billion for owners of property damaged by floods or standing water, András Batiz told the press. The Spokesman reported that the damage assessment completed has revealed that the floods of the Danube and the Tisza and the high standing water levels have damaged a total of 10500 residential properties. Floods strand thousands of tourists visiting Bulgaria's Black Sea

SOFIA, Bulgaria -- Thousands of tourists remained stranded in their hotel rooms or had to be evacuated from flooded buildings, campsites and damaged cars following torrential rains around Bulgaria's southern Black Sea coast on Sunday (2 July). The Civil Protection Service says rescue teams worked through the night to drain water from damaged buildings in the municipalities of Nessebar, Sozopol and Obzor. There were no reports of casualties.

The weather in Bulgaria has been stable for the past several weeks. Temperatures have been high, which has helped to dry the land up. Some people are still able to grow their crops. Eastern Europe flooding: Romania situation report

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance recently sent funds from One Great Hour of Sharing and designated funds to respond to ongoing needs related to flooding in Eastern Europe. Although the floods have faded from the news, the situation remains critical in parts of Romania. The floods began in mid-April and affected four countries in Eastern Europe when the Danube River became swollen from heavy rains and melting snow. Romania was hit most severely by the floods.
