ERD provides emergency assistance to flood victims in Malawi and Kenya

Episcopal Relief and Development is responding to people affected by floods in Malawi and Kenya.
Malawi

ERD is supplying emergency assistance to the northern region of Malawi where thousands are left homeless due to torrential rains. UNICEF Humanitarian Action: Malawi Donor Update 18 Apr 2006

- Humanitarian food assistance will continue for 1.4 million people in 14 districts until end of April due to long periods of dry spell and high malnutrition rates. Maize prices continue to be beyond the purchasing power of many individual households.
- High malnutrition rates persist. The combination of HIV/AIDS, severe shortage of quality health staff and food insecurity has resulted in high mortality rates among children in Nutrition Rehabilitation Units

- The cholera outbreak in 2005/06 has been the worst since 2001/02 with 4,394 cases and 53 deaths reported.

Thousands more homeless in Malawi floods

BLANTYRE, March 9, 2006 (AFP) - About 2,000 people have lost their homes in floods that have hit central Malawi, taking shelter in churches, mosques and schools, after storms in the south, a government official said Thursday.
The latest flooding came just a few days after heavy rains in the south left 6,000 homeless, destroyed crops and washed away bridges and roads.

"Heavy rains fell for several hours on Tuesday night, making a number of rivers burst their banks," said Hebert Manthalu, the disaster management officer for the district of Salima,

Floods heighten fears of Malawi cholera outbreak

BLANTYRE, March 9 (Reuters) - Severe flooding in Malawi's main southern tourist district has killed at least four people and raised fears of a large-scale cholera outbreak, officials said on Thursday.

"As government, our resources have been stretched with other on-going relief efforts and we don't have enough capacity now. What is worrying is the fear of more cholera cases," deputy health minister Charles Mchacha told Reuters.

Floods hit the region around Mangochi at the southern tip of Lake Malawi, already coping with a cholera outbreak

Malawi: Floods threaten life saving food aid

Heavy rain is hampering life saving food distributions in the south of Malawi for more than 70,000 people at risk from hunger because of the current drought.
Now rains have hit the Chikwawa and Nsjane districts in the south, causing serious flooding of six of Malawi's rivers and washing away newly planted maize, millet and sorghum crops.

CAFOD's partner in Malawi, CADECOM - Catholic Development Commission of Malawi, has been running emergency food programmes in the areas in a response to the drought.

Nota Moyo, CADECOM co-ordinator for the
