Death toll from floods in north China rises to 16 as water recedes

BEIJING, Oct 6 (AFP) - The death toll from flooding caused by torrential rains in north China's Shaanxi province has risen to 16, with four others missing, as water slowly begins to recede, state media said Thursday.

Typhoon Longwang meanwhile petered out in southeastern China after killing at least 65 people, 50 of them police cadets swept away in a landslide.

Some 36 of their colleagues remain missing, but with the disaster being carefully managed by Chinese authorities and news being released only through the official Xinhua news agency, there was no word on their fate.
