As of October 2004, the number of countries facing serious food shortages throughout the world stands at 35 with 23 in Africa, 6 in Asia/Near East, 5 in Latin America and 1 in Europe. A new wave of incessant rains in the whole of Assam and its catchment areas in neighbouring states started on 6 October triggering a third wave of floods that have increased the plight of the population.

ACT member Church’s Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) and the Lutheran World Service India (LWSI) are proposing to revise this appeal in order to accommodate the assistance to the new affected population.

Due to a low pressure area over West Bengal area, heavy rains since the 7th of October triggered flash floods in the districts of Assam. Since 11 October, the number of districts have increased from 4 to 14 and these are: Goalpara, Karbi Anglong, Dhubri, Kamrup Metropolitan district, Nagaon, Kamrum Rural, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Darrang, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur. ACT members respond as new floods hit north eastern states of India

Geneva, October 14, 2004 - Members of the global alliance, Action by Churches Together (ACT) International, are stepping up relief operations in India's north eastern states of Assam and West Bengal after a spate of new floods.

Northeast India flood toll rises to 184

NEW DELHI, Oct 12, 2004 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- At least 22 bodies were recovered overnight in flood-ravaged Assam state, taking the death toll in flash floods and mudslides in northeast India in the past week to 184, the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) reported Tuesday.
A government official said the bodies were found by soldiers engaged in relief and rescue operations from the worst hit Goalpara district, 150 km from the main city of Guwahati.
