JAKARTA, March 4 (AFP) - The Indonesian
government is planning to reforest three million hectares (7.4 million
acres) in Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi islands over the next five years,
a minister said Tuesday.
The program, to cost some 15 trillion
rupiah (1.7 billion dollars), will help prevent natural disasters such
as floods and landslides caused by deforestration, top welfare minister
Yusuf Kalla said.
Kalla, quoted by the Antara news agency,
said that for this year the government has earmarked 600,000 hectares for
replanting.
