Indonesia plans to reforest three million hectares of land

JAKARTA, March 4 (AFP) - The Indonesian government is planning to reforest three million hectares (7.4 million acres) in Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi islands over the next five years, a minister said Tuesday.

The program, to cost some 15 trillion rupiah (1.7 billion dollars), will help prevent natural disasters such as floods and landslides caused by deforestration, top welfare minister Yusuf Kalla said.

Kalla, quoted by the Antara news agency, said that for this year the government has earmarked 600,000 hectares for replanting.

1. NATURAL DISASTERS

According to the US Geological Survey and the BMG (Meteorology and Geophysics Agency), an earthquake occurred on Thursday (19 Dec.) in Northern Molucca Sea measuring at 5.6 on the Richter Scale with a depth of 33 km, 0.97N and 126.19E. The nearest city was Ternate in North Maluku. The UNRC in Ternate felt the tremors, but no damages or casualties have been recorded.

Papua/Earthquake

In connection with the earthquake which occurred in Manokwari on 17 October 2002, MSF-B Papua in cooperation with the Provincial Health Department has sent a team to assess the need in the water and sanitation (WatSan) sector in Ransiki and Oransbari. The team stayed in the location from 16 to 30 November, and managed to make a new borehole with handpump, repair several wells and placing filters, make a new well and assist in chlorinating most of the wells in the locations.

Mt. Papandayan, West Java / Volcano

Although the volcanic activities of Mt Papandayan in the sub district of Cisurupan in West Java have subsided, the alert level remains the same as last week. The Head of Social Bureau Office in Bayongbong at the main Operations Centre reported on Friday (29 Nov.) that some 151 families (628 people) remain in three evacuation posts, and others are spreading out residing with their families and relatives. It is reported that food aid is sufficient.
