Viet Nam: Flood-prone province gets assistance from humanitarian aid office

An Giang, May 27 (VNA) - The European Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) has recently granted gifts, valued at 30,000 USD, to the flood-prone districts of Tri Ton, Tinh Bien, Chau Phu and Tan Chau in the Mekong delta province of An Giang.

The gifts included 300 commodity coupons, worth 1.1 million VND each, for 300 households in Tri Ton and Tinh Bien districts and a sum of money for purchasing boats and building public water closets, kindergartens and safe water supply systems in Chau Phu and Tan Chau districts.

Australia supports Viet Nam's natural disaster mitigation project

Ha Noi, Mar. 31 (VNA) - The Australian government will provide 12.25 million AUD for a 15 million AUD (8 million USD) project to mitigate natural disasters in the central Quang Ngai province.

The agreement was signed in Ha Noi on Monday by Joe Thwaites, Australian Ambassador and Nguyen Kim Hieu, Chairman of Quang Ngai People's Committee.

The project is the second-largest Australian aid project in Quang Ngai under the Viet Nam-Australia development programme.

Between 1996 and 2000, natural disasters killed 325 people, destroyed 5,500 houses, damaged 207,000 more and destroyed

Viet Nam and donors assess impacts of water disaster on the poor

Ho Chi Minh City 21 January 2003: The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) is holding a three day workshop in Ho Chi Minh City to assess the impacts of natural disasters, including floods and droughts, on the Poor and the links of disaster to poverty and gender inequality.

Viet Nam: EC helps control floods in Mekong delta

An Giang, Feb. 17 (VNA) - The Humanitarian Aid Office of the European Commission (ECHO) has granted 60,200 euros to a project to help control floods in the Mekong delta.

Under the project, people in flood-prone areas will be provided with information and facilities to be prepared in the event of the natural disaster.

At the moment, Thomas Tiedemann and Chitise Nugoohi, who are representatives from Care, a German Non-Government Organisation, are on a fact-finding tour of Mekong delta An Giang province to help the local people stabilise their lives during flood season.

Brussels, 13 January 2003 - The European Commission has recently taken a series of humanitarian decisions worth almost €17 million covering disaster prevention and relief activities in various crisis zones. The assistance is channelled through the Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), which comes under the authority of Commissioner Poul Nielson.
