Perú: INDECI trasladó más de 528 toneladas de ayuda a damnificados de Puno y Madre de Dios

El Instituto Nacional de Defensa Civil (INDECI), además de la ayuda humanitaria entregada desde los 17 Almacenes Adelantados de su Plan Logístico situados en los departamentos de Puno y Madre de Dios ha trasladado, hasta la fecha, más de 528 toneladas de ayuda procedente de los almacenes centrales de INDECI, Programa Nacional de Asistencia Alimentaria (PRONAA), Ministerio de Salud, Ministerio de Agricultura, Banco de Materiales, así como otros organismos internacionales y no gubernamentales.

Inundaciones en el Perú: Informe de situación 7 Feb 2003

1. Se considera que se está regresando a la situación normal en cuanto a eventos naturales. Perú: Se incrementa a 59 mil damnificados y afectados por lluvias en zona sur del país

San Isidro, 2 de febrero de 2003 - Las diversas inundaciones que afectaron los departamentos de Puno, Madre de Dios y Cusco han dejado, a la fecha, un saldo de 18 personas muertas y 59 mil 474 damnificados y afectados, seg=FAn los =FAltimos reportes del Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia Nacional - COEN.
La información que maneja el COEN, también señala un n=FAmero de 6,119 viviendas entre destruidas, afectadas e inhabilitadas.

Update on Peru flooding Jul 2002

In April 2002, the community of Piura, Peru was severely affected by heavy floods following 13 hours of continuous rain.
As a result, houses have collapsed and household goods, crops, and small animals have been lost. Staff members have also seen the appearance of diseases such as diarrhea, malaria, skin and respiratory related diseases, conjunctivitis and typhoid.

Violence continued to affect Colombia: (a) On 13 April a bomb went off apparently aimed at presidential candidate Alvaro Uribe, killing five persons and wounding 15 others. (b) On 9 April, eight bombings took place in Bogota forcing the evacuation of Government offices. WFP's Bogota office continued to function normally. (c) Armed groups abducted 12 lawmakers in Cali. (d) Two soldiers were killed in clashes with the armed groups.

Floods in Peru

Our field staff in Peru has reported a State of Emergency in the Piura program area.
Piura has recently been hit by heavy floods following 13 hours of continuous rain. The impact of the storms has caused severe damage to homes, schools, roads, property, harvest, and livestock. The four bridges that connect the cities of Piura and Castilla have been closed for two consecutive days creating long traffic lines to cross the two swinging bridges.

The situation is becoming quieter after five days of heavy rains in 11 of Peru's 24 departments. All airports have been reopened and minor rains (rainy season in Peru from December to May) are expected for the next two days.

The Peruvian Red Cross remains on alert after seven days of heavy rains and floods which have left four people dead and 1,660 families affected in eleven of the twenty four departments of Peru.

Because these rains have been more intense than those normally experienced during the December to May rainy season, there is concern that they could be a harbinger of the El Niño weather phenomemon which last appeared with devastating impact in 1997 and 1998.

State of Alert declared in Southern and Central Peru

Intense rain which began Sunday February 3rd in the south-west of Peru has extended toward the central and northern regions or Peru causing rivers to overflow and landslides in several departments. A young mother and her 8-month-old baby were killed outside the capital city of Lima.
Two World Vision projects have been affected.

World Vision emergency teams and community volunteers carried out preliminary assessments in the projects and reported that the most urgent needs are clothing, mattresses, blankets and kitchen

1. Since 5 February, heavy rains have been affecting several departments, causing flooding and triggering landslides across the country.

The Situation

Four people have died in the last 48 hours in floods that have affected several Peruvian departments, the Institute for Civil Defence (INDECI) reported. A young woman, 25, and her baby, died when they were hit by falling rocks in Lima; a three-year-old child died of bronchitis in Lima; and a man drowned in Carapago. The River Huaycoloro, in Lima, burst its banks destroying 30 houses.
