More than 40 million vulnerable people will be helped in the coming year in the framework of the Federation's global appeal, launched on December 4 in Geneva. The appeal for 270 million Swiss francs, for the first time seeks more funding for health than for disaster response. "Our priority is the fight against HIV/AIDS which will kill more people this decade than all the wars and other disasters that have occurred over the past 50 years," said Mr. Didier J. Bolivia: Preliminary results from impact assessment on floods/drought helps WFP target those most in need of food aid

From WFP-ODM Emergency Situation Report 29 August 2001
The Ministry of Agriculture, with the support of WFP and FAO, is carrying out an impact assessment of the floods and drought that occurred during the first quarter of the year. The conclusion of the assessment has been delayed due to social unrest in the rural areas and a drastic reduction of the Ministry’s personnel (because of an institutional reform).

Preliminary findings, however, will help WFP in targeting those most at risk of food insecurity.

Boliva: EMOP shortfall

From WFP-ODM Emergency Situation Report 22 August 2001
Floods during the first three months of the year in most of the country, combined with droughts in other areas, have affected more than 350,000 people. Most are subsistence farmers that are facing food insecurity in the short-run.

Approximately 119,000 hectares of crops have been lost. An important part of these losses are basic food basket crops: potato, quinoa and maize. Also, important productive infrastructure (small irrigation systems, roads, productive land, etc.) has been destroyed.

FAO/GIEWS - Foodcrops & Shortages 3/01 - Bolivia

Land is being prepared for the forthcoming wheat and potato campaign. Water accumulated in valley reservoirs from abundant summer rains gives these crops an early good prospect. Harvesting of cereal and root crops in the highlands and valleys is under way and yields in departments not affected by floods are reported above-average. Important crop losses were observed in the northern highlands of La Paz and Oruro, mainly because of excess water in river banks and plains. In the valleys, both cereals and root tubers were also affected by water logging
