EMERGENCY RELIEF TO FLOODS IN ROMANIA

Frequent flooding caused by torrential rains which continued from mid May, have affected 33 of Romania's 41 districts. More than 60,000 people were affected as of 25 June.

At the instruction of the Government of Japan, Jica will deliver the following relief supplies to the disaster affected country:

  • 20 Tents for 6 persons
  • 20 Generator and extension cables
  • 20 Water purifiers
  • 1 Emergency health supply kit (for 10000 people/1kit)
The above relief items will be airlifted to Bucharest by the earliest possible flight

Help continues for 3,000 people affected by floods in Transylvania

On 24 and 25 June the World Vision (WV) Romania emergency intervention team made a second attempt to help people affected by the floods in Mures County (Transylvania.) World Vision responded immediately to local authorities' request for bottled water, bread, preserved meat, rice and oil. The vehicles from WV's Bucharest office distributed the emergency supplies in the villages of Gheorghe Doja, Leordeni and Ilieni. This relief consisted of more than 2000 litres of mineral water, pasta, rice, canned meat, sugar, sweets, vegetable oil and plastic bags.

Romania Floods OCHA - Situation Report No. 1

1. The Director General of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has addressed an official request for assistance to the United Nations following the severe floods which affected the country in June 1998.

Background

2. From 8-22 June nearly two-thirds of Romania's 41 districts were hit with torrential rain causing widespread flooding and landslides. Official reports indicate that, as of 22 June, 21 persons died, 1,000 people had to be evacuated, 1,886 houses were destroyed, 11,133 household annexes damaged. Over 103,000 hectares

Floods in Romania

Since 8 June, Romania has been hit by torrential rainfall, resulting in catastrophic floods and landslides in 28 out of the country's 41 districts. According to official statistics 23 persons have died, nearly 2,000 homes have been destroyed, with 1,000 persons forced to leave their homes. The Romanian Red Cross immediately sent 500 blankets, 500 sets of bed linen and some 6 tons of food (oil, sugar and rice) to flood victims.
