1. This report has been prepared following a United Nations Disaster Assessment Coordination (UNDAC) team mission ending on 3 September 1997.

BACKGROUND

2. Seychelles is an island republic in the western Indian Ocean, consisting of 115 islands, of which the main group is situated between 4-5 degrees South and 55-56 degrees East. The total population is some 75,000. The capital, Victoria, is located on the main island of Mahe.

Following damages caused by flooding last month, Seychelles needs international assistance to reverse serious disruption
before the next wet season in October, according to the latest situation report prepared by the United Nations Department of
Humanitarian Affairs (DHA).

The report, which is based on a recent visit to the country by a UN Disaster Assessment Coordination Team, says that heavy rains damaged 247 homes, of which 22 were completely destroyed. Landslides brought down power lines and heavy rains flooded the airport,

The Red Cross Society of Seychelles (RCSS) met an unexpected challenge ten days ago, when torrential rains on the islands of Praslin, La Digue and Mahé killed two people. The resulting floods and landslides caused severe damage to homes, farmland, roads and retaining walls. The RCSS immediately provided temporary shelter to 300 people and distributed meals and blankets. The United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team sent to the Seychelles by the Relief Coordination Branch, DHA - Geneva has sent its first report.
I. CURRENT SITUATION

1. Emergency Relief: Immediate relief needs have been met. Assistance needs rest on recovery and mitigation of, and preparation for, future disasters.

2. Casualties: 2 deaths, 2 missing, 2 injured.

3. Health: Pollution from the overflow of septic tanks is widespread and makes most urgent the provision of new sewage system, now under consideration. No other public health issues

Following freak weather conditions in Seychelles from 13 to 17 August, including torrential rains which caused two deaths, DHA is dispatching a Disaster Assessment and Coordination team there. Also as part of its response to requests by the Government of Seychelles, DHA will continue to disseminate reports on the situation.

The Disaster
From 13-17 August, the Seychelles islands of Praslin, La Digue and Mahé were hit by exceptionally strong rains. A total of 640 mm of rainfall was recorded during this period - almost double the previous record for the whole month of August. This torrential rains have caused two deaths so far as well as extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. In addition, the rains have had a severe impact on forests and on farmland due to significant runoff of topsoil. UNDHA has provisionally estimated damages to run to USD 5.5 million.
